showhouse

{The Adamsleigh Estate in Greensboro, NC}

I had such a wonderful time being a Style Spotter at High Point Market last fall, and was honored when I was asked to host a “Suite Spot Tour” for this market (along with other MGs Emily, Lauren and Jill). It is always a majorly fun gig to mingle with my dear friends, favorite vendors-both old and new- and of course with the “Mama” to us all, Cheminne Taylor-Smith who brings this whole world alive for us twice a year in High Point, North Carolina.

Between running around market looking for the latest and greatest pieces for my clients and showroom and prepping for my tour, I made it to the Junior League of Greensboro Showhouse.  I was invited to attend a small, private tour of the home with Traditional Home who is the sponsor of this magnificent undertaking- which was an amazing, intimate way to be able to view the stunning home. The philanthropic endeavors that this ShowHouse is sponsoring with all of the proceeds are grand and noble-to say the least. It is truly a brilliant collaboration between Trad Home and the Junior League. We are a design obsessed group and what better timing to highlight the fabulous work of some of my treasured colleagues than our annual Spring trek to market! So good to see you Beth Brenner and your warm welcome into the Showhouse was the icing on the cake. I confess to a Krispy Kreme sampling as well :)

I am currently working on the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago’s Lake Forest Showhouse for the second consecutive time, so I have the utmost respect for these designers who put their blood, sweat and tears into their spaces.  It definitely all pays off  in the end!  The house looked absolutely gorgeous.

There were so many rooms I loved, I could not just pick one favorite.  Did I mention that this 15,00 square foot, 33 room historic mansion located on 13 acres is on the market and can be yours for around $4 million?  After seeing the photos below, you might want to give your realtor a call.

Here are some of the highlights of this amazing and historic home. A fun fact is that many of the family’s own photographs are exhibited within the Showhouse to add to that historic and personal feel of the family that once spent many years within. Right up my alley!

I hope that all of you that are enjoying the markets of High Point this season will stop by for a “Bird’s Eye View” of this labor of design love. It was truly the highlight of my time spent here. Congrats to all of the talented and lovely designer’s that created this eye candy for us all to devour!

How adorable is this water coloring rendering of the Hermes La Maison home line?

I discovered the new Hermes La Maison home line when our wonderful Dedar rep came to our showroom and offices at the end of last year, sharing with us the most amazing textiles and wall coverings from this iconic brand. Now, it is not enough to swoon over their fashionable bags, scarves, throws, clothing, boots, sandals, watches (of which I am a huge fan) and baubles-more delightful goodies to ponder!

It wasn’t long after that I decided to recover an antique French chair in the Fil de Argents print (yes, I have a slight thing for chains) in the orange color way (I also have a slight orange thing, too).  This chair made its way to a recently completed Arizona design project, but my obsession with the Hermes home line had only just begun.

Not only does the Hermes La Maison collection include textiles and wall coverings, it includes furniture and rugs as well (obviously of the ultra luxurious sort).  I do not know the exact prices of all the items, but knowing the price point of Hermes,  I can only imagine how many zeroes follow that leather sofa…

Take a look at some of my favorites from the collection!

A bit about The Pippa Collection…

“This line of foldable and easy-to-move-around furniture was imagined by Rena Dumas and Peter Coles, in the Hermès spirit of “moving with elegance”. It combines the warmth and softness of wood (pearwood, ebonized maple or teak) with the suppleness and resilience of leather (fontanella cowhide, natural cowhide, clemence bullcalf, skipper buffalo).”

A bit about The Matieres Collection…

“In the Matières collection, Antonio Citterio highlighted once more the functionality of furniture, and prioritized conviviality, comfort and harmony. This collection also emphasizes the sensory of the materials: leather, fabric, wood, metal.
During his visit to the Hermès Conservatory of Creations, the designer was particularly drawn to a saddle rack whose proportions and volume inspired him for the design of his armrests. The reading chair reclines into a relaxation position.”

A bit about The Jean Michele Frank Collection…

“Jean-Michel Frank is an iconic designer from the Art Deco movement. He was the most influentialial designer and decorator of the 1920′s and 1930′s. The lines are rigorous and emphasized, shapes are simple yet refined. The materials used are versatile, from the rawest to the most sophisticated.
Sofas are compact, well-balanced and truly simple, iconic of Frank’s style.”

Fashion and Interior Design quote by MieleThis quote by fashion designer Carlos Miele is very dear to me. His no-boundaries outlook on fashion is similar to how I design spaces. My philosophy of Modern-ique® , integrating antiques and artifacts with modern design, is just that. I truly believe that success can often come from the most unexpected pairings both in fashion and decor! My career-beginning with my Fashion Merchandising degree from the University of Arizona brought me to work for Neiman Marcus and now I have brought that “fashion passion” alive within my  interior design firm.

So imagine my excitement when I was invited to participate in the Oct. 8 Fashion + Design #Oliohop. OlioHops are blog hops organized by Olioboard. Olioboard is a new tool in “social commerce.” It allows you to  create interior design moodboards and even 2D and 3D room designs using real products clipped from your favorite websites.

I will show you two examples of how to bring together fashion and decor, built with the help of Olioboard. And I will be back on this topic throughout October as I head to High Point Market later this week. I am extremely excited about my role in this year’s High Point Market as a Style Spotter — the entire market will be focused on fashion and home decor!

Fashion trends, materials and colors affect home decor in a big way. A few weeks back I wrote a post about interior color predictions for fall/winter, many of these being based on fashion color trends. This time I wanted to do a deeper dive into the fashion trends that will have a big impact on the furniture and decor design we will see in everyone’s homes tres soon.

The Plaid Fad

Plaid isn’t just for your great-grandmother’s pillows or just for lodge decor anymore (although, these both evoke fond and warm memories that make us reach out toward it).  Bold and contemporary plaid pieces in a variety of colors are a fashion statement and must-have wardrobe items. Who else just LOVES the visual impact of the plaid plates on the wall (upper right within the images)? So chic! And just check out that swatch of sassy aqua and brown, such a well-balanced and unique palette, a defining characteristic of Kirkby fabrics (part of the The Romo Group). That’s just one of the fabulous fabrics I’m using in my DIFFA Dining by Design room where I am aligning with Romo next month here in Chicago. Plaid is going to be center-stage in my dining space!

All That Glitters is Gold

Metallics have been all the fashion rage these past few years but we’re now starting to see that same trend in home decor. I love adding hints of gold touches especially to lighting pieces, such as a gorgeous antique chandelier as well as accessory accents like plush Pyar & Co. pillows (featured on the bottom right). The owner of Pyar , Paula Queen, is one of my favorite design clients – big design things happening that I will share soon- and an entrepreneur mixing Indian textiles within a plethora of exquisite pillows. The pieces reflect the philosophy of Pyar, pieces that tell stories, “Pure love. Pure luxury.”

The photo in the middle is from one of my favorite design projects. The whimsical gold details on both the chandelier and table make the room feel warm and royal. Another of my favorite client dining rooms shown upper right and the powder room of another project, seen below, are just a few recent examples of how to use gold accents in the home.

In your opinion, what are some fashion trends that you expect will make it’s mark in home decor? Follow me as I head out to High Point Market this Saturday to see just what is the hottest in home design. As a Market Style Spotter you will be able to see just what I view as this season’s top picks for your own homes. Be sure to follow my Pinterest board for all the delicious details. And I certainly will be “spotting” for my interior design clients -they are counting on me!

Leave your comments below and share your thoughts with all of our Material Girls. I hope you’ve been inspired to create some of your very own dreamy moodboards on Olioboard.

Going Bold

And who says that two bold trends can’t mesh together into one fabulous room? ;) Again, please hop on over to these other fabulous design blogs for our Fashion + Decor #Oliohop! Get all the details on the Oliohop Facebook page. Thanks and Happy #OlioHop-ing!

Spain enchants me……On my very first trip to this captivating country,  I had the opportunity to be swept off my feet and to travel to Spain courtesy of Cosentino, the makers of Silestone, Sensa and Eco products. Cosentino’s current production capacity is 700,000 square meters of engineered stone per year, making it the largest manufacturer of engineered stone slabs in the world. The opportunity to visit their quarries and manufacturing plant and to get an all exclusive behind-the-scenes pass of everything Cosentino was the highlight of my summer.  And what a trip it was.

Starting in Barcelona, my husband  (Edels) and I met up with a group of fast paced and trend-setting  people in the design industry who were also part of this “party”. No expense was spared to provide us with an intimate glimpse into the culture and traditions of Spain. Being in the company with other like-minded design aficionados really was a treat, and in Spain we all aligned and gathered some roots.  Salutations to my friends who joined me on the trip…Patty Dominguez-Field Marketing Director for Cosentino, the leader of our group and the one who treated us all like royalty; Lisa Henry-National President of ASID , Randy Fiser-CEO of ASID  ; Shawn and Edward Alshut  -Duo architects of Studio A2 in Atlanta; Amanda Zitlin  and Terri Crittenden – both designers at the Chicago Interior Design Firm of Susan Fredman. What an amazing time we had together and experiences that I will never forget. We laughed, learned and shared much.

Along with experiencing some of the astounding sites, restaurants, shopping and nightlife to be seen in Barcelona, we were able to visit a local Silestone dealer and to gather in their exquisite showroom. We were then zoomed off  to Almeria  where we were able to visit Cosentino Headquarters. Upon our arrival to the airport, is was apparent that Cosentino had had a hand unto the design.  Cosentino is a  global leader within its field, is devoted to the responsible and innovative development of top-quality surfaces and is the world´s major producer of quartz surfaces, it is a family business consortium financed entirely with Spanish capital. I greatly admire their values and hope to aspire to them all within my own business.

A modern interior all created with Cosentino stone…

The Cosentino Headquarters certainly were a sight to see.  A very memorable part of the trip was having the opportunity to check out Cosentino’s Silestone quarries. Silestone is a naturally beautiful, durable quartz. (As you can see below!) Silestone is the world’s leading natural quartz surface and features a range of more than 65 unique colors! Silestone is the one and only worktop made of quartz with anti-bacterial protection, giving it hygienic properties that are not to be found anywhere else on the market. All in all, I love their products-having installation plotted for my new home in Arizona and my Buckingham I + D Showroom!

A Cosentino quarry- a great view of it all….

Of course, all that walking around quarries got all of our shoes a little dirty!  And check out my nail polish-quite the popular color this summer- Essie Bikini So Teeny! I just can’t resist a nod to fashion which sets off a light bulb for daily inspiration. I have been using blue quite a bit lately within my client projects. Just an FYI-this color has been sold out FOREVER- this was my swan song-best place for that bad news. Inspiration quite literally never stops!

I am SO excited to be adding Cosentino’s Silestone in the color Lagoon in the Buckingham I+D showroom! It was such a great experience to watch the entire process- and look at the gorgeous results. We are all simply drooling over this color-simple and timeless- and my team is impatiently waiting for the BI+D installation!

While we were onsite- an interesting part of our trip was watching the manufacturing of Silestone.  Love this group pic of us respecting the process of proper and safe protocol for one of the most environmentally sound products in the world.

We had some very special group outings during the trip, including a luncheon within the private offices of the heart of the Cosentino Headquarter’s. The beautifully catered affair was an intimate glimpse of the fortitude, intelligence and elegance of the family themselves. Let it be said that our day together was regal in feel. I have had a glimpse of what it feels like to exhibit core values on every level-and their embrace of the generations of family that will carry on these values for many more years to come.

Our castle- Luncheon with Paco and his exquisite olive oil at Castillo de Canena

Oh the architecture…historic and regal.  We were received as friends and left as such! And yes, we got to sample it! YUM!

John and me during our final night in Granada..Alhambra Castle in the background. A night to treasure forever.

Thank you to the Chicago Cosentino Center for the Prexury Petrified Wood on the island and Haiku Silestone on the perimeter countertop in my designed kitchen at the CS Interiors 5th Anniversary Showcase at the Ritz-Carlton Residences (Open House October 12-13). Purchase tickets here. You will love it all as the Chicago design community has again proven what we can do!

And a nod of gratitude to all of the Cosentino Family for the opportunity to have been invited to travel to Spain and to have been embraced as a part of their larger family. My experiences there have peaked my keen design interest to see what new and innovative products Cosentino comes up with next. I think that we all should stay tuned!

Adios amigos! xx

As some of you may already know, I was selected to be a Style Spotter at High Point Market this fall. I am extremely excited to be involved with such a fantastic and talented group of people. Plus, I just love the energy and enthusiasm (+ the AWESOME parties) that surrounds this cutting edge home furnishings market.

I had an idea…and I decided to reach out to some of the other trend setters and to ask them a few questions to get them know them a bit better. That being said, this post is dedicated to highlighting three of the special creative minds that are “Style Spotters” alongside moi. I hope you all enjoy meeting them as much as I did! Don’t forget to stop on by my Pinterest board during the High Point Market-October 13-18 to see what I’ve discovered as the hottest happenings of the design year! P.S. I absolutely ADORE Currey & Co and Bethanne as well :)

Meet Style Spotter, Jason Oliver Nixon:

Jason, partner of Madcap Cottage, creates designs that reflect a respect for tradition- but with a punch of color and playful patterns. Scrolling through his work and you can see just that! And his personality is to match. After all, he states that he’s all about the ‘F’ words, “frisky, fabulous, and fun to be around.” I am honored to introduce you all to Jason Oliver Nixon and I am very excited to be included with him as a Style Spotter at this year’s High Point Market on October 13-18! I have already shared a few giggles with him as  we connected at a KBIS event at Hearst Tower this summer.

1. How would you define your style?
Madcap and marvelous. I loathe beige. So damn boring. Give me color and whimsy, panache and aplomb. Let’s mix patterns and live life like we are in a Busby Berkeley Technicolor musical with Fred and Ginger sashaying by. Is that Carmen Miranda rumba-ing across my living room with a backup band dressed like  a bunch of bananas? Why, yes, it is. Pass the martinis, and crank up the Lily Allen. And ring up India, darling, and see what the weather’s like in Mumbai.

2. What or who is your design inspiration?
John Loecke and I turn to Auntie Mame, Eloise, Mom, and travel when it comes to our eureka! moments. We also recently did up a living room in a color palette that we lifted from a bucket of fried chicken from Popeye’s, so you never know when the muse will visit. And let’s just say that Terpsichore and Melpomene can eat more coleslaw than anyone I know. We spend a lot of time in India, so that always influences us, but then we love Milwaukee and Tampa, Florida, too. And we are totally revved-up by music, everything from The Go-Gos and Bryan Ferry to Foster the People and Bananarama.

3. What do you look forward to the most when it comes to your role as Style Spotter at High Point this year?
I am crazy about High Point and have been coming down for the past ten years. It’s like old friend’s week, and there’s gobs of wine in most of the showrooms. John and I drive down and eat far too much BBQ. We bring our dogs, too, and they like to sniff out the latest trends. I can’t wait to scope out something totally crazy and daring that will make me shriek like I was a lasso-ed pig at some messed-up rodeo. Give me a hall tree done up with pineapples, or maybe Cecil over at Currey & Company has come up with a furnishing that is so just-plucked-from-the-moors, n’est-ce pas? “Hello, Heathcliff, it’s Catherine. Come sit upon my Victorian confidante!” Speaking of Currey, if you need a good spot of hooch, pay a visit to the divine Bethanne Matari. She’s always game for a spot o’ the brown liquor any time of the day or night. Bottoms up, darlings!

See what did I say?! I’m definitely looking forward to High Point this year. Follow Mr. Nixon on Twitter for his updates and check out his website to check out more of his work!

Meet Style Spotter, Lori Dennis:

Lori Dennis is an internationally known Interior Designer, speaker, best- selling author, co-founder of Design Camp and star of HGTV’s new show “The Real Designing Women”. Be sure to check out Lori’s website to scroll through some of her latest projects- she does gorgeous work!

1. How would you define your style?
Architecturally appropriate, clean, warm and classic… with a twist.

2. What or who is your design inspiration?
Being a Southern California girl and avid beach goer,  the ocean side influences much of my life and work.  Two of my favorite interior designers are Karin Blake and Victoria Hagan.  Karin is a master of West Coast Beach style and Victoria reigns the East Coast shores.  I’ve looked to their pared down, but warm interior styles for inspiration throughout my entire career.

3. What do you look forward to the most when it comes to your role as Style Spotter at High Point this year?
Being able to take a few days off from work, family and life and immerse myself in world class design is pure bliss for me. And I can’t lie, I love the who’s who parties!

Check out more of Lori’s work here and be sure to follow her on Twitter to seek out her latest design updates!

Meet Style Spotter, Janel Laban:

Janel Laban is the Executive Editor of Apartment Therapy, the popular design and lifestyle blog all about life at home. If you haven’t checked out her blog, put that at the top of your to-do list because it is just crammed full of creative and fun posts! Again, I had the pleasure of talking to Janel via the internet and got to know her a little better. She’s another Style Spotter that I’m so excited to meet at High Point!

1. How would you define your style?
I  love classic shapes and patterns in unexpected combinations, colors or finishes and rooms that pull together pieces from a mix of eras. My home is a mashup of Chinoiserie accents, clean lined 20th century classics, a big, old well-loved Persian rug, lots of books, records and lamps, fresh flowers and plenty of pink and red, my favorite color combination. My favorite homes are always apartments in the city that look a little lived in and I think the best rooms have personal “displays” in them – I’m a fan of vignettes of gathered, interesting little bits of art, tchotchkes, antiques, photos and personal memorabilia.

2. What or who is your design inspiration?
I have so many design inspirations and happily, I discover more everyday, thanks to my job. Here’s a quick, off the top of my mind list of people, places and things that inspire me, design-wise: Terence Conran (especially the original House Book, although I love lots of things about his work), traditional Chinese interiors (one of the reasons I love kung fu movies), Patricia Urquiola,  foreign product packaging design, both old and new (I always go into supermarkets and drug stores when traveling), white floors, Tom Dixon, Paris, Scandinavian fabrics, Muji, the dark brown glossy walls (well, actually, the whole apartment) from the movie “All that Jazz”, Claeeson Kovisto Rune, Tokyo, Thomas O’Brien’s book “American Modern”, NYC and fashion photography.
3. What do you look forward to the most when it comes to your role as Style Spotter at High Point this year?
It’s my first trip to High Point so I’m really just looking forward to the overall experience – it’s a design editor rite of passage! The Style Spotter program is the cherry on top.

Don’t forget to connect with these fabulous Style Spotters, and be on the lookout for more information about my role in High Point! What are you looking forward to the most at High Point this year? Please comment and share!

One of my lovely BID girls, Paulina, tied the knot last year-and another BID gal Shannon is doing the same this month- and I have to say that I have always had a soft spot for weddings.  With two daughters (and a son) myself, I can’t help but dream about dresses, bouquets, cakes, shoes…(I am admittedly design obsessed, after all).

I was very excited when Chicago-based blog “The Every Girl” asked if they could use my Buckingham Interiors + Design showroom as the backdrop for their “Wedding Week” special!  This week long event highlighted budget conscious wedding decor, and I must say that I was very impressed!  Their styling was excellent and I was thrilled with their incorporation of antiques at my BID showroom.  Although they primarily used my bare white painted brick walls at the showroom, we certainly do have quite a bit on display…definitely stop by if you are in the Chi!  Buckingham Interiors + Design Showroom is located at 1820 Grand Avenue, Chicago. We have sold quite a few pieces in our latest exhibit of local artists-with day jobs-so the walls will be refreshed soon…I promise!

I love sharing my modern + antique finds with my clients, MG followers and shelter mag readers.  Now, I am so thrilled to say that I will be sharing my favorite pieces from Buckingham Interiors + Design with 1stdibs members too!  I loved being a part of the One Kings Lane Design Blogger Tastemaker Tag sale, and now I have been asked to be a dealer on one of my other favorite sites.  I will have my collection up and ready for viewing tomorrow at 12pm CST!

I have long been virtually obsessed with 1stdibs, aka “The Most Beautiful Things on Earth” (love their tag line).  As a site dedicated to the highest quality of all things furniture, fashion, art…you name it, I feel strongly that 1stdibs has maintained the integrity of high end products while still making it all accessible to an internet audience.

Here are some of my current favorites on 1stdibs now-  from the only place where one can view “Storefronts” of 1200 of the most respected antiques dealers in the world!

Wicker Park project that will be featured in tomorrow on LXTV Open House

I had such a blast when I hosted an LXTV tour of my own home on Chicago’s North Shore, and was so excited when I was invited back as a guest designer to give a tour of one of my projects in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.

This project was several years in the making, and I must say that it is one of my proudest achievements.  The home is loved and cherished by a lovely family and I was so lucky that they were willing to embark on this journey with me in pushing the design envelope a bit in a surprising fashion.  This house is an amazing 19th century Italianate manse that the family-along with the renowned Chicago architectural firm of Vinci Hamp and famed Chicago Landscape Design firm, Hoerr Schaudt and myself- completely gutted and restored from top to bottom.  No detail was overlooked in this massive undertaking.  It was definitely worth the years of waiting for the big reveal. The house is beyond amazing, especially since it sits on a rare 5 city lots in the heart of one of Chicago’s chicest and most historic neighborhoods.  It is like a suburban paradise in the middle of its urban surroundings!

Join me on the tour tomorrow (Sunday, March 4th) during LXTV Open House on NBC Channel 5 at 10:30 AM CST.  I would love to have my MGs tune in :)

Here’s a sneak peek of what you will be seeing tomorrow…

Upholstered Bergere

So excited that several of the Material Girls (Lauren, Emily and I) will be part of the Design Bloggers Tastemakers Tag Sale on One Kings Lane!  OKL, which I now affectionately call it within my office, selected 10 of their favorite interior design blogs to participate in this grandiose event. Of all of the various projects inside the design world which I have been involved in, this one is definitely right up there towards the top…working with my fellow MG contributors is always a thrill. I am reminded of my previous years as the owner of an antiques store in Cincinnati and also of my exhibit’s within the antiques world at shows in Chicago, NYC, The Hampton’s and LA.  Bringing me back to my roots a bit :)

In prep for our big debut, I thought I’d feature several of my favorites on OKL today.  Be sure to stop by the Design Bloggers Tastemakers Tag Sale on One Kings Lane beginning Tuesday, February 28th at 6 PM PST!  Can’t wait!
