Today I saw one of my most prized possessions (that I got for only $29.95 from Z Gallerie- the Gorgon Vase) on the D Home blog featured as one of their favorite “steals”…it’s about time this vase got some press!

People always think that this vase on my dining room table is a lot more expensive than it is…it looks so pretty in person (especially for the price) and apparently you can go spend an arm and a leg on something very similar to this at Grange- who knew?

What are your thoughts on the amber colored Gorgon vase that Z Gallerie has just introduced for fall? Just as cute or…not so much?

And the winner is…

^ Luxurious Red!

Although the game did not fare so well for OU this year, we can say that Luxurious Red (OU Crimson) won the 2008 MG Red River “Color Out” 15-11. It was pretty close!

Can’t wait for next year where these two colors battle it out once again and OU bumps TX from its number one spot!

Sofa backs!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Oct 12, 2008 | 4 Comments | Category: Furniture

In this month’s issue, House Beautiful wrote a great article called, “I’m looking for a Floating Sofa”. You can read it online here. They compiled 12 gorgeous sofas that you can proudly showcase in the middle of your room- ones that you won’t be embarassed or afraid to reveal their backsides!

This sofa from J. Robert Scott is by far my favorite sofa they picked. Referred to as the “Retro”, it’s completely flawless- not only does it look insanely comfortable, it’s also a very pretty taupey-gray color, and has a shape that doesn’t lean too traditional nor too modern.

I also love how the top of the sofa just rolls right into the back.

I love a sofa in the middle of the room…furniture doesn’t always have to be pressed against the wall…have fun with your arrangement!

Here are some rooms where the sofa sits freely in the middle of the room- its back looking as stunning as the front!

Tassled tie backs attached to the back of this sofa, make this traditional room even more detailed and dressy.

A simple roll back sofa (similar to the House Beautiful one above) gives this room a nice clean look

The mod floral fabric and chrome frame on this vintage sofa definitely adds some fascination to its back.

I just received in the mail a photo that I had “fiddled” from Photofiddle. It looks great! They took one of my photos that I had taken on my Costa Rica vacay and edited it to make it look more like a piece of art- putting the photo on canvas so I can hang it up in my home.

You can get any photo fiddled in any style- black and white, watercolor, sepia- you name it!

This is my Costa Rica photo “before”

And this is the Costa Rica pic after it was photo fiddled in their “fantasy” style

I was surprised that I hadn’t yet heard of this fantastic web company…perhaps because the Photofiddle site is relatively new- it went online in June 2004 but it wasn’t too long after the launch that they received a ton of press from the Washington Post, USA Today, PC Magazine & more. What really put Photofiddle on the map was when Oprah put them on the O list in 2006! Gosh, being put on the O List is my dream!

Recently voted by the viewers of the CNBC show as “The Next Big Idea”, Photofiddle is really coming into its own and making my plain old non-edited photos look pretty boring! Be sure to stop by their site and start fiddlin all your photos. Such a great and personalized way to take up dead wall space in your home!

After almost ten months since I was hired on, the pediatric dentist office that I have been talking about/working on for so long is now open for business! I leave on a little roadtrip to go attend its grand opening tomorrow in Georgetown which will be a nice break in the week from the normal routine.

It being my very first dentist office project, I will say that designing for kids has never been so much fun!

It’s amazing how fast a space can be built out and go from this concept board…

To this…in just a few months

It’s a strange bittersweet feeling when a project comes to an end- you don’t know whether to be excited that it’s all built and everything’s completed or to be sad that it’s all over with. I guess you just have to be ready for what’s next!
If you are in the Austin/Georgetown area, you should go stop in and see Dr. Kelly at Star Smiles- she even has “Star Bucks”, video games, and sugarless candy, for the kiddos!

{More Star Smiles pics to come on EJ Interiors site!}

Red River Color-Out!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Oct 08, 2008 | 6 Comments | Category: Color, Contests

It’s that time of year again, the weekend where the Sooners battle/beat the Longhorns (otherwise known as OU/ TX)…or if you want to mispronounce it like my boyfriend/sister/brother in law, it can also be referred to as TX/OU.

Football is probably one of my least favorite sports but as a native Sooner, OU/TX weekend is always so exciting for us OU or TX grads here in Dallas- lots of people, lots of energy, and LOTS of color….

Crimson and burnt orange will be EVERYWHERE this weekend…and although we know who will win the game already :) , what color wins in your book?

These two colors (both Sherwin Williams):

Luxurious Red (SW 6314) representing OU
and Pennywise (SW 6349) representing TX

Burnt orange is supposed to be a hot color for fall…do you agree?

{Traditional Home}

Then we have crimson as the opposing team…

{Point Click Home}

{Domino}

{Mrs. Blandings Blog}

It really is a tough decision and although I am a dedicated Sooner, I may have to lean towards the burnt orange side due to the allegiance of one very cute fan!

Which color would you rather put in your home if you had to choose and where would you put it?

Take our Color Poll on the right hand side of our home page and in addition to the big game this weekend, we’ll see who wins the Material Girls “Red River Color-Out!”

Cheesy, I know, but for a girl who doesn’t love football, you gotta find a way to make it interesting!!

Fall into babyGap home!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Oct 06, 2008 | 3 Comments | Category: Kids, Shops and Showrooms

I love finding new baby home websites (no mom, I’m not pregnant) I just think the sky is the limit with nurseries and these colorful catalogs are so much fun to look at.

A little birdie told me that one of the biggest clothing retailers, GAP- (Baby Gap to be more specific) has introduced babyGap home- a collection of their favorite baby furniture, decor, bedding, toys, accessories- all things cute, safe, AND functional!

Working with the most trusted baby brands around the world, Gap is onto yet another sector of the business and we hope it proves to be a successful one for them.

What’s next- Banana Republic Baby and Baby Home? You never know! These baby chains are popping up everywhere!

Stores that carry the full babyGap home collection include- Dallas Galleria, LA The Grove, Santa Clara Valley Fair, and NYC- 34th and Broadway.

Living Color

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Oct 05, 2008 | 8 Comments | Category: Art

Ever since a fieldtrip in college to The Oklahoma City Museum of Art , I have been fascinated with Dale Chihuly and his colorful and bold pieces of contemporary art. The elements he creates are nothing short of amazing.

Dale became infamous for the large pieces of modern sculpture he would create from blown glass in the latter part of the 20th century.

Imaginative pieces by Dale are displayed throughout the OKC museum

Some a lot larger than others…

This one is just breathtaking in person

And who could forget Dale’s installation in Vegas’s Bellagio hotel? The story behind it is incredible…Dale built the entire 70′ x 30′ ceiling (full-scale) at his studio in Seattle.

I barely have enough room for floor plans in my “studio”! Named Fiordi di Como/Flowers of Como, this ceiling addition was installed with over two thousand handblown glass pieces!!! Impressive

End result if you haven’t been to Vegas to see it already

I saw random Chihuly’s the other day when I was reading an issue of the Austin/San Antonio Luxe Magazine and fell in love with a room designed by Mary Anne Smiley. I had never seen Chihuly pieces used in a residential space before, and I just couldn’t get over how good this room looked with all of them in Dale’s signature bright colors. Aside from color, the 3-D aspect of these elements coming off of the wall, really made a statement in this family’s living room and gave the wall some dimension.

Mary Anne could have just opted for some standard wall decor- but why go for something simple when you have access to Chihuly and you have a creative brain like Mary Anne’s!

After searching on the internet for some time, she finally located the perfect six at a gallery in Canada to complete her bright and symmetrical arrangement. Love love love!

Backyard Bliss

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Oct 05, 2008 | 2 Comments | Category: Home Exteriors

Interior Designer Windsor Smith’s backyard retreat in LA…

With the weather PERFECT here in Dallas at 73 degrees, I really wish that right about now I had Windsor’s backyard set up…her exterior haven is cuter than my living room! Blue trellises, sunburst mirror, comfy upholstered furniture, floor pillows, antique rugs, garden stools- what more could a girl ask for? Maybe some lemonade and the newest Us weekly would complete this scenario! I could lounge here for hours…

A few of my favorite pieces from Windsor Smith Home

I am sure you’ve all caught up on your Traditional Home for the month already (I am still only halfway through!) but there was one article in particular that caught my eye this month and the photos of her design landed themselves right among my other cherished tear sheets and not to mention, straight on the cover of TH…the gorgeous photo above is one of Eileen Boyd’s designs- a Living Room in Long Island.

I am really drawn to this design because it’s like she threw all of the conventional rules out the window and decided to go with an atypical color combination and it looks amazing!

“Taxicab yellow” and “Gustavian gray” is how Traditional Home describes the color mix. I love the blue accents she threw in to the combination also.

She even made sure that on the day of the shoot she fit into the room’s color palette nicely- so cute!

My favorite part of the room is the “work area”- a functional spot that houses a modern glass and stainless steel desk that is juxtaposed with a traditional French cane back chair.

What’s even more impressive is that Eileen found the time to do a piece of artwork to go in there also! She surely is superwoman.

Researching Eileen, I discovered that she is also the designer of one of my all time favorite rooms! I’ve had this photo saved for a while now…and an even bigger coincidence, I was reading a window treatment book today and they had this same pic in it as a drapery reference!

There is certainly a lot we can learn from Miss Eileen…graphic, classic, and always chic, she tops the list as one of my new favorites!
