Sit down, stay a while!

When most people think of bathrooms, they think of the basics- tile, paint, flooring, countertop, fixtures, hardware, mirrors.

But the designing shouldn’t stop there- we love a good “homey” master bathroom. A room as cozy as your living area (that is, if you have the space). You definitely don’t want to haul in an 85 inch sofa to make things more “homey” in there- that could be a bit awkward. But there are ways you can give your bathroom a more welcoming and luxurious look by just adding a few unexpected pieces….

This master bath gives off a spa-like vibe. A chair and ottoman sit nestled in a corner, a garden seat serves as a side table, and a potted plant helps to bring some of the outdoors in. Guazy Ikea curtains give off an ethereal type quality while a bamboo framed mirror and wooden armoire provide a few natural elements that juxtapose nicely with the crystal chandelier.

I love what they have done here with the petite sunburst mirror. They positioned it over the window to where its shadow creates a crest like symbol in the floor. Genius! A sitting chair in between two built ins also gives the space a more homey vibe.

This bathroom is simple, clean, and fresh looking. However, without the few unexpected elements such as the feminine window treatment, yellow flowers, and mirrored side table (for that extra bit of sparkle) it wouldn’t look nearly as interesting and inviting.

This idea is the absolute best out of all of them! Usually you see clam shells on a living room coffee table or in another public space- but in this master bath, the residents chose instead to place it in the shower…it serves two purposes- it is visually interesting as well as functional- it could hold all of your bath accessories! Is that a loofah in theirs? The zebra print stool, lamps, sconces, light fixture, side table, and flowers aren’t too shabby either and give this bathroom more of a lived in look!

It’s baaaack! Wallpaper that is. Of course we have been through this before in previous posts- but I really do love wallpaper in a master or powder bath…it gives that extra bit of pattern that you don’t get with paint or tile. With wallpaper, the possibilities are endless (including the possibility that you could splash water on it!) Yikes. But all paranoia aside, this bathroom looks stunning with its pink floral paper from Cowtan & Tout and metallic stool. Very cute also how they placed a random framed picture against the tub!

The vanity in this bathroom looks like a living room piece of furniture- a gorgeous console table! Almost reminds me of something from Modern Dose! The ornate Brocade Home mirror, framed piece of art, vase of pink flowers, and interesting glass globe pendants hanging from the ceiling made me almost mistake it for a living area.

If you have the space in your bathroom, why not utilize it? Get creative and try different pieces that you love in there. In my bathroom, I framed copies of room pics from one of my favorite Interior Design coffee table books and created a series out of it.

What are some of the things you’ve done in your bathroom that is unique and different? We’d love to know!

Trade Up!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Nov 17, 2008 | 1 Comment | Category: Books

Last year for Christmas, I got a copy of The Savvy Girl’s Guide to Money from my mom- (was this supposed to be a hint at something?) I rendered it a coffee table book…along with my other random coffee table books I’ve gotten for Christmas that are collecting dust like Runnin’ with the Big Dogs or How to be a Lady.

One day after the Christmas holidays settled down, I decided to open up the book to see if there was any useful info in it and I ended up reading the entire thing! The book explains how if you forgo your morning Starbucks run for an entire week, you can save a significant amount of money (it really does add up over an entire year) and spend it on something you’ve been wanting to save up for (like that tufted upholstered headboard you’ve always wanted or that gorgeous chandelier!)

Imagine how many rooms Brit Brit could have furnished if she didn’t have her Starbucks frap five times a day?

Where am I going with this?

Well House Beautiful has a new web exclusive column called Trading Up: They say money can’t buy you happiness, but if you’re spending it anyway, shouldn’t it go toward something that makes your home a happier place? While the economy is down, don’t give up: trade up!

Interesting and alternate ways on how to put your money into something that lasts. Skip out on a first class plane ticket to Paris and instead buy your OWN seat to put in your home that you will have for years to come- read more on this article here

The ideas they have don’t stop here…it’s a weekly column discussing alternate ways to spend money and making your House…well, beautiful.

Pieces has a new website! Be sure to check it out. If you’ve never heard of this Atlanta based showroom (open since May ’04), they have loads and loads of furniture, pillows, and accessories that are just DRENCHED in bold color…there is nothing boring or unexciting here. This site is totally me- I am a color fanatic!

This chair was handmade in France…beautiful chartreuse color with gorgeous nailhead trim- a Fauteuil at its finest!!

What is my obsession with green lately? This geometric green pillow is sure to be your couch’s lucky charm

I’m not normally into red, but I looove these vintage Chippendale dining chairs. In another color, they would look amazing in my Dining Room! A girl can dream!

You gotta have a pair of Turquoise Foo Dogs!

This large mirrored screen is painted in a white semi gloss and could add a big graphic punch to any room

I am definitely one of the girliest “Material Girls”- had to throw in something pink! For $1390, you can get a pair of fabulous fiberglass side chairs…just one of these would make such a cute little vanity chair

I am a big fan of black lamp shades. Although I often end up going with the safest choice for my own home- cream or white. But I definitely think the black shades on these lamps radiate a ton of panache!

Saved the best for last of course! Pieces even carries some pet accessories! I have recently gotten very into pet accessories as my parents just got a beagle puppy, Sammy, who would look so cute in this yellow raincoat! Christmas present maybe?

We had sooooo much fun with the Material Girls/Swank Lighting Design Board Contest.

And we learned a few things. Initially we thought we were going to be inundated with hundreds of entries…that was before we realized just how much work actually goes into the process of creating a design board. Well I’m sure that Emily and Lauren were already aware of this, but Doug and I just thought you slap a few couch pictures, fabric swatches, paint chips, and of course a pair of Swank Lamps on a board and take a picture. As it turns out you professionals actually put a lot of thought and research into the job, you spend hours and hours creating a concept for the design that reflects the personality and lifestyle of the client, you spend hours and hours in stores and online sourcing products, and you spend hours and hours putting the products together with the concept onto a board for presentation to the client. WOW! You really do earn your money. Well that we did already know.

Before we get to the winners announcements, we must take the time to thank a few folks who freely contributed their time and expertise to making this contest a success. First a big thanks to the Material Girls, Emily and Lauren, for allowing Swank to participate. And to our judges thank you so much: Julia Buckingham Edelmann of Buckingham Interiors in Chicago, Karen Olivia of Alkemie , Joe Cariati (L.A. glass artist who is creating a fabulous new line of American hand blown glass lamps for Swank), and Doug of Swank who was like a kid on Christmas morning everytime a new entry arrived. Thank you all very much.

Now the winners:

1st Place: Big Bird by Joshua

2nd place: Six Feet Under by Gina

3rd place: Top Design by Lana

Congratulations to our lucky and very talented winners. Your lamps will be shipped out next week and we really hope you will forward us photos of how you use them. And a HUGE thanks to all the other talented designers who submitted entries. Your prizes will arrive soon. Enjoy!

Another Etsy talent on the horizon!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Nov 14, 2008 | 2 Comments | Category: Art

About a year ago, the word Etsy was a very foreign concept to me…What’s that? I wondered. Everyone was talking about this so called Etsy! So I logged on for the first time last November to find an illustrator for our blog header (ended up finding the very talented Brooke Hagel) and had great luck with the site. It was like a hidden world, that Etsy! A ton of talented, up and coming artists all in one place! How did I not know about this site before?

So just recently I discovered another Etsy talent, Matt Weaver. He excels in exterior architectural drawings-you give him a few pictures of your house, he draws it by hand, digitizes it, colorizes it, and then you select how you would like to have it delivered- as a digital file or, for an additional fee, printed on your choice of media.

We love this! He’s so talented and detailed…I have always admired those who can draw…it’s something that I have continuously worked at but my drawings have never looked this good!

Here are a few from his Etsy shop

What a great gift to give someone for the upcoming holidays!

We’ve had so many purple color schemes in our Swank/MG contest entries- this one using a gorgeous shade of lavendar.

Here is a Top Design entry by Lana of Topsy Turvy blog

I chose to design a bedroom for Margaret Russell, a judge on Top Design, and editor of Elle Décor magazine.

When I think of Ms. Russell, I think glamour, luxury and comfort. As editor of an interior design magazine, she is constantly immersed in the best design, and I think would want a room that is worldly, sophisticated and modern, yet not trendy. I suspect she might be interested in a little edginess and/or something unexpected. And I think she would demand superb function, as well.

I chose a color scheme of lavender, cream, and bronze, with shots of black for depth. I think this would flatter her skin tones, and her wardrobe as well, since she often wears black. I’ve designed a room that combines a mix of modern and classic, with good art and luxurious materials. I think she would like a serene, calming room, but not a boring room.

1. The room starts with the wall behind the bed – with a floor-to-ceiling panel of antiqued mirrored squares.

2. The headboard would be custom made by Indulge, and covered with cream-colored linen. An upholstered headboard makes for comfort while reading in bed.

3. The bench at the foot of the bed is covered in the same linen combined with a cream silk mohair.

4. Matching bedside tables are fully slipcovered with the same cream linen as the headboard, and the skirt is banded with a thick stripe of lavender silk. These slipcovered tables would be quite functional as they are large in size and there is hidden storage space.

5. A pair of lavendar Seguso Swirl vintage Murano lamps (with lucite bases and finials) from Swank Lighting sit on the bedside tables.

6. A solid lavender silk bolster pillow, edged with bronze silk is placed below the bed shams, and the bedcover is cream linen and drops to the floor with simple corner pleats. There is no footboard to interrupt the drop of the bedcover. The sheets are embroidered with Margaret’s initials in bronze.

7. Drapes are floor-to-ceiling bronze-colored silk, just breaking on the floor.

8. Across the room, an acrylic desk is topped with

9. a Modernist adjustable brass table lamp (both from 1stdibs.com) and

10. a 19th century gilt Italian chair covered with Black Mu ikat fabric, from Madeliene Weinrib.

11. The rug is from NyingZemo through Rugmark.

12. A Line Vautrin mirror is from 1stdibs.com

13. An Elliott Puckette painting

14. An arrangement of lavender roses

15. A small framed modern painting in a black/cream palette

This wonderful entry by Sydney is one of my favorites. If this were true, I’d say that Grace finally got her stuff together post Will.

By Sydney:

Grace moves to a Tribeca loft. This is her opportunity to show her evolution as a decorator. Her style is a marriage of contemporary and traditional with Asian, deco and opulent old world flavors. The lively colors draw from her collection of fashion illustrations and photographs and are flattering to a redhead. She likes to mix textures, shapes and surfaces. Grace is elegant and stylish, but fun and bold too.

A design for 30 Rock’s Jack Donaghy

By Karen…

I chose Jack Donaghy from 30 Rock as my television character. He’s an uber-conservative, career-driven executive, and in the episode that guest starred Jerry Seinfeld, the two discussed Svenborgia.

Jack Donaghy: “So how can i help you, Jerry?”

Jerry Seinfeld: “Jack, I was vacationing with my family in Europe in a country only rich people know about.”

JD: “Svenborgia?”

Naturally, when Jack wants to retreat from his high-pressure NYC life, he’d jet over to Svenborgia. The estate would reflect his traditional aesthetic (he always wears a tux after 6pm), and I chose a palette focused on woods, rich neutral colors, small highlights of texture, and restrained sophistication.

Big Bird’s Nest by Joshua…

Here is a design board I made for Big Bird’s big city nest. My idea was for a place where Big Bird would stay when he is in New York. Big Bird has been around for a long time, but he is still a kid, so I went for bright, primary colors, and lots of repetition through circular shapes and forms. The lamps, pillow pattern, circular shelf units, turntable, swirls in the rug, and the shape of Big Bird’s head in the painting all mirror the ovular shape of the nest, which is the focus of the room. Since he doesn’t wear clothes, he doesn’t need much storage, but things like books can be stored in the two red end tables on either side of his nest.
