With every new year, comes a re-cap of the last.  For the past two years, I’ve carried on the tradition of doing a post right before the new year, entitled “Flashback (insert year here) Trends”.

Last year, my post, Flashback 2008 Trends highlighted the year’s fashion crazes and how they ultimately influenced the world of interiors.  The year before?  Same concept- how fashion paralleled with interiors in 2007.

2009- what a year!  Here’s a look back on the year’s most popular prints, colors, and materials in fashion and some examples we found of how they can be used in the home.  (thanks to all the celebs who participated!)

When I think of year round “holiday-looking” homes, the Manhattan apartment designed by Miles Redd immediately comes to mind.

That’s a Wrap!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Dec 16, 2009 | 5 Comments | Category: Gifts, Holiday

I can’t believe Christmas is almost a week away!  And you know what that means?  Procrastination in wrapping the gifts I’ve bought usually starts around this time!  But this year I’ve started thinking about gift wrap early.  Ever since I saw a graphic and stylish wrapping paper in a local magazine (sold at the Container Store), I’ve had gift wrap on the brain!

I did a search and found some of the most chic wrapping paper on the web and had to share these great looking prints! When did gift wrap get so striking? I think it’s time I re-vamped my gift wrapping approach and went for something a little more attractive than my usual!

About a month ago, I posted about the Home for the Holidays event that I had participated in at the Dallas Trade Mart.  My photographer just sent me the photos she took of the “Holiday Glam” guest bedroom that I designed, and I must say, she did an awesome job with the photography! (Contact me if you need a really talented Dallas photographer- I love to brag on Jessica, she is the best!)

All in all, Home for the Holidays was so much fun- but definitely a lot of hard work.  The paint and carpet were chosen for us, but other than that, you were given free reign to design whatever you wanted!

I had to go around begging vendors in the trade center to let me borrow their pieces (since most showrooms needed their furniture to be on display IN their showroom during market).  But all’s well that ends well, and I ended up getting most of the furniture I wanted with the exception of a couple of black and white cowhide x benches that were supposed to go at the end of the bed.

I am really appreciative of the showrooms who participated and wanted to pass along their info in case any of you are interested in these specific pieces (or just visiting their showroom in the Dallas World Trade Center/Trade Mart!)

The chair below, called the Seatbelt Chair, was a hit with everyone! However, people were too afraid to sit in it for fear that it would break…but it is surprisingly very sturdy and it is made incredibly well!

I received the PB catalog the other day- and woah, is it patriotic! They went to town with red, white and blue this month.

pb1

It’s too bad they don’t rent out their furniture for the weekend, because we could have used some 7/4 decor at the lakehouse this weekend!

pb2

Nothing like red, white and blue to put you in the mood for fireworks, food, family, and celebrating America’s independence!

Happy Birthday United States! Hope everyone has a very relaxing and safe weekend.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there (including my own!)

This post is dedicated to all the men, like my dad, who insist on picking out one and only one piece of furniture for their home…the piece that means so much to them- the recliner.

dad-recliner-chair-th

If done the right way, a recliner could be a nice asset to a living room; however, if chosen wrongly (or simply put- if a male’s recliner was originally bought during his college frat days or inherited from a long lost family member) it could ruin a room.

I know this from experience- because of my dad’s neck surgery last April, he decided to purchase a more “comfortable” recliner on a whim.  Well, let’s just say his recliner makes the one below look good!

rec

It’s not so much the color of his recliner- but the style.  The back is so high it looks like a king’s throne and it doesn’t just disappear into the living room it stands out horribly and looks like a medical chair.

securedownload

We thought eventually (once my dad was feeling better) he’d agree to moving his recliner to another room.   We told him “it would look darling in the closet” or “didn’t you always want a sitting area in the attic?” But nope- the recliner has stayed put in their living room for over a year…he loves it.  The electric motor, wheelchair back, and matching adjustable neck pillow make it just too hard for him to give up.  My mom wanted requests from readers on how to make it disappear?

With all the recliner obsession out there among men, pretty soon this will be the new fad…

rocket_lpgsv_17266

Recliners as transportation? Your man would never have to leave his chair to get to work!

motorized-recliner-01

With all the bad recliners out there, I’m sure some of you can attest to a few recliner horror stories- we’d love to hear (and see!)

Ahhh the below is much much better…dad, how do you feel about cowhide? :)

I thought this was cute…this Easter weekend, April 11-12, you can enter DWR’s “egg hunt”.

If you purchase any floor sample, you’ll be automatically entered in a drawing to win one of two Arne Jacobsen iconic Egg chairs. (valued at $5,934.00)

This Egg chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 and is a symbol of sophisticated urbanism. It is believed to have been one of the first swiveling upholstered chairs (along with the Swan chair, he designed)

Good luck- it’s a beauty!

Green with Envy! Part II

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Mar 17, 2009 | 8 Comments | Category: Color, Holiday

Happy St. Patty’s Day!!

Apparently the MG’s are crazy for this holiday and the color green! Great minds think alike so I am going to follow Jill’s Green Envy post with Green with Envy: Part II! Abby, Julia, and Lauren, feel free to keep up the trend and post Green with Envy: Parts III, IV, and V!

I always remember the date of St. Patty’s because I am Irish and it’s my half birthday!
I love this holiday because green is one of my all time favorite colors. It’s not gender specific, looks great with sooo many other colors: yellow, chocolate, pink, black and white, blue, orange, camel, white/cream….the only color I really hate with green is red- it screams Christmas.

I felt it was only appropriate to show you some images of my favorite green rooms. Enjoy your day and kiss someone who is Irish! :)

And to all a GOOD NIGHT!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Dec 26, 2008 | 2 Comments | Category: Holiday

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays everyone!

I had such a nice Christmas this year- got to spend Christmas Eve in Athens with the boyfriend’s parents and then came back to Dallas today to finish up the rest of the festivities with my family.

{Harry, their family dog, all ready to celebrate….}

It was so wonderful seeing those I had not seen in a while, eating a ton of terrific food, and getting a tad bit of R&R in among all the Christmas chaos.

Watched the infamous “A Christmas Story” movie (a MUST over the holidays- actually TBS plays it for 24 hours straight so it is pretty hard to miss!)

Remember this lamp? Hideous or hilarious? Or both?

One of my favorite gifts was the Domino Book of Decorating. I know, I know, I’m a little behind the other bloggers who posted about this fabulous book months ago…but I wanted to wait it out until Christmas so I could look forward to it as one of my gifts! (and I can’t tell you how many times I went into Borders since its debut, eyeing this book wanting to rip it open and read it cover to cover) It has gotten so much hype in the blogging world, that I wanted so badly to see what everyone has been talking about.

Did not disappoint one bit! I read it cover to cover in one sitting. It really does have some great room pics, creative home ideas, and I for sure learned things that I hadn’t known before!

It is a great reference for designers and homeowners alike. One of the perks of purchasing the book is that it comes with a free subscription to Domino! (perfect timing since mine was up in December anyways!)

Before Christmas officially ends in a couple of hours, I wanted to send you all this link to Valorie Hart’s home all decorated for Christmas- she writes the popular blog, Visual Vamp.

She used non-traditional Christmas colors to decorate (which I LOVE) and pillows “wrapped” in ribbons! Can she be any cuter, seriously?
