The Ultimate Eye Sore

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there (including my own!)

This post is dedicated to all the men, like my dad, who insist on picking out one and only one piece of furniture for their home…the piece that means so much to them- the recliner.

If done the right way, a recliner could be a nice asset to a living room; however, if chosen wrongly (or simply put- if a male’s recliner was originally bought during his college frat days or inherited from a long lost family member) it could ruin a room.

I know this from experience- because of my dad’s neck surgery last April, he decided to purchase a more “comfortable” recliner on a whim.  Well, let’s just say his recliner makes the one below look good!

It’s not so much the color of his recliner- but the style.  The back is so high it looks like a king’s throne and it doesn’t just disappear into the living room it stands out horribly and looks like a medical chair.

We thought eventually (once my dad was feeling better) he’d agree to moving his recliner to another room.   We told him “it would look darling in the closet” or “didn’t you always want a sitting area in the attic?” But nope- the recliner has stayed put in their living room for over a year…he loves it.  The electric motor, wheelchair back, and matching adjustable neck pillow make it just too hard for him to give up.  My mom wanted requests from readers on how to make it disappear?

With all the recliner obsession out there among men, pretty soon this will be the new fad…

Recliners as transportation? Your man would never have to leave his chair to get to work!

With all the bad recliners out there, I’m sure some of you can attest to a few recliner horror stories- we’d love to hear (and see!)

Ahhh the below is much much better…dad, how do you feel about cowhide? 🙂

I thought this was cute…this Easter weekend, April 11-12, you can enter DWR’s “egg hunt”.

If you purchase any floor sample, you’ll be automatically entered in a drawing to win one of two Arne Jacobsen iconic Egg chairs. (valued at $5,934.00)

This Egg chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 and is a symbol of sophisticated urbanism. It is believed to have been one of the first swiveling upholstered chairs (along with the Swan chair, he designed)

Good luck- it’s a beauty!

Green with Envy! Part II

Happy St. Patty’s Day!!

Apparently the MG’s are crazy for this holiday and the color green! Great minds think alike so I am going to follow Jill’s Green Envy post with Green with Envy: Part II! Abby, Julia, and Lauren, feel free to keep up the trend and post Green with Envy: Parts III, IV, and V!

I always remember the date of St. Patty’s because I am Irish and it’s my half birthday!
I love this holiday because green is one of my all time favorite colors. It’s not gender specific, looks great with sooo many other colors: yellow, chocolate, pink, black and white, blue, orange, camel, white/cream….the only color I really hate with green is red- it screams Christmas.

I felt it was only appropriate to show you some images of my favorite green rooms. Enjoy your day and kiss someone who is Irish! 🙂

After seeing all of these beautiful rooms, it makes me green with envy! What’s your favorite shade of green?

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays everyone!

I had such a nice Christmas this year- got to spend Christmas Eve in Athens with the boyfriend’s parents and then came back to Dallas today to finish up the rest of the festivities with my family.

{Harry, their family dog, all ready to celebrate….}

It was so wonderful seeing those I had not seen in a while, eating a ton of terrific food, and getting a tad bit of R&R in among all the Christmas chaos.

Watched the infamous “A Christmas Story” movie (a MUST over the holidays- actually TBS plays it for 24 hours straight so it is pretty hard to miss!)

Remember this lamp? Hideous or hilarious? Or both?

One of my favorite gifts was the Domino Book of Decorating. I know, I know, I’m a little behind the other bloggers who posted about this fabulous book months ago…but I wanted to wait it out until Christmas so I could look forward to it as one of my gifts! (and I can’t tell you how many times I went into Borders since its debut, eyeing this book wanting to rip it open and read it cover to cover) It has gotten so much hype in the blogging world, that I wanted so badly to see what everyone has been talking about.

Did not disappoint one bit! I read it cover to cover in one sitting. It really does have some great room pics, creative home ideas, and I for sure learned things that I hadn’t known before!

It is a great reference for designers and homeowners alike. One of the perks of purchasing the book is that it comes with a free subscription to Domino! (perfect timing since mine was up in December anyways!)

Before Christmas officially ends in a couple of hours, I wanted to send you all this link to Valorie Hart’s home all decorated for Christmas- she writes the popular blog, Visual Vamp.

She used non-traditional Christmas colors to decorate (which I LOVE) and pillows “wrapped” in ribbons! Can she be any cuter, seriously?

As soon as one holiday ends….

another seems to begin!

After having two rounds of Thanksgiving meals yesterday at my parents house, two of my aunts, my mom, my sisters, and myself decided that the eating and socializing must still continue. We had our annual “Holiday Cheer” buffet at Zodiac at the downtown Neimans. If you live in Dallas and haven’t been, the buffet menu is incredible…

Every year we have a fantastic time gabbing and catching up, but I can’t say that I wasn’t just as interested in seeing all of the elegant and always breathtaking holiday decor they put up at Neimans.

Zodiac is a vision within itself. Having been in business for 50 years, this restaurant’s color scheme of black, white, and red accents give it a classic, graphic, and glamorous vibe.

Geometric shapes lining the walls give you something interesting to look at when waiting for the elevator

And the view going down the escalator isn’t so shabby either!

We always like to stop in at the bridal department just for fun…looks like a beautiful winter wonderland

Red and gold envelope the first floor elevators…if this isn’t an indication of the holidays, I don’t know what is!

My favorite part- a very clever and cute indication of which elevator will be taking you upstairs- a red pendant (that almost appears to be floating) lights up when your elevator gets there!

Many Christmas trees were spaced throughout the first floor

Large, gorgeous chandeliers hung from the ceilings

The downtown Neimans is definitely unlike any other Neimans in Dallas and is such a fun experience. I love going there once a year to get my stylish Christmas decor fix! If you are in Dallas, be sure to swing by- they even have pics with Santa!

Happy Turkey Day!

I have been meaning to post this bedroom image from Southern Accents for a while. What better time to do it than now?

I thought I’d leave you all with a very beautiful, serene, quiet image before the hustle and bustle of the holidays- a good reminder to me and everyone else to take some time to relax this week, take it easy, and enjoy time with your loved ones!

I have so many things to be thankful for….just a few of them include great family and friends, a roof over my head, and the fact that I get to do what I love. Also thankful for the people who make our design blog possible- the wonderful MG bloggers. You all are the best- I know how much hard work goes into your posts….so a big thank you! Also a big thank you to the readers and fellow bloggers who take the time to share their insights and homes with us. You make our blog worth writing for!

Have a safe and very happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Tis the season for contests!

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Oct 29, 2008 | 2 Comments | Category: Contests, Holiday

Wanted to let you all know about 2 great contests that I have learned about recently…

One is a contest over at The Galiway blog where you can win your favorite boxed holiday greeting cards. All you have to do is post a comment on their blog post stating which of the Galison greeting cards is your favorite- easy as that! Contest ends November 13th!
My favorite are the vintage “Dear Santa” cards…so adorable!

Another contest that comes a little earlier this year is the one hosted by Blogging Top Design. You all are invited to design a room around one of these fantastic crystal chandeliers from Swarovski’s Crystal Palace collection – just like the designers did on the show!

And…the celebrity judge will be…(wait for it)…..Margaret Russell herself from Top Design and Editor of Elle Decor! The contest starts immediately and all entries are due by Friday, November 7th. More info on it here!

With all these contests on the horizon- what is a girl to do? Participate of course! We love these!

We heart V Day!

Valentine’s Day will soon be here and we’ve compiled a few photos of our favorite red and pink rooms!

This decked out closet from Traditional Home (Oct. 2007) is so playful and feminine. Flats and heels are showcased in pink shelves while purses, dresses, and sweaters are neatly arranged in front of a barely there lilac color. The bench adds a bit of whimsy and ties together all of the surrounding colors. If only my closet was a quarter of this size!

Another photo from Traditional Home- I love this antique desk that sits in the Master Bedroom- it serves to separate the bedroom from a sitting area. The added touches of soft pink in the throw and roses really gives this bedroom an added touch of romanticism.

Yet another Traditional Home photo here (Oct. 2007) by Jamie Drake. The magazine describes Jamie as “infusing a ‘wow’ factor into interiors with his fearless use of bold color”. That’s for sure! You have to be pretty fearless to cover an entire bedroom in fuchsia. Adding purple broke up all the pink while still maintaining femininity and luxury. Textiles were designed byJamie also (his collection for Schumacher). Again, he’s another designer who mixes the contemporary (lucite chair- not shown, and luxe geometric velvet headboard) with the traditional (antique desk- not shown, and gilt accessories).

Hello red! This New York apartment with its bold red walls looks extraordinary paired with blacks, golds, and even animal prints to accent. This scheme is very exotic and daring. I love it because it does not look too masculine or feminine in here. It’s a room anyone could get along with!

This boudoir featured in Oprah at Home is incredibly chic. Can’t get enough of those pink houndstooth drapes or that mirrored vanity. This room acts almost as a little retreat for one to go to and relax in- with shoes all over the floor, feminine colors everywhere, and elegant furniture- every girl should have one of these to escape to!

Here is Gwyneth Paltrow’s Dining Room in the Hamptons (featured in last year’s House and Garden). The pink here is almost invisible- but if you look closely you will see small touches of pink sparkle in the stunning chandelier and in the inexpensive, but fabulous plates from CB2. We love how this Dining Room is far from being overdone and its simplicity is what really gets us!

Another celeb home photo for ya. I bet you can guess whose bedroom this is- oh yes, the always flashy and extravagent Paris Hilton’s bedroom (or was her bedroom- those celebs seem to move around a lot!) I actually really adore her bedroom. The powdered pink and mirrored furniture (I have a thing for those mirrored pieces as you can tell) looks very striking but at the same time very serene.

Last celeb bedroom featured in Elle Decor U.K. is that of the designer Betsey Johnson. Her clothing is very unique as is her home design. I am really liking the yellow Dining Chairs paired with the pink walls- very unexpected and unique. Her signature color pink is used everywhere in her home- even pink carpet in the bedroom (not really my style but it wouldn’t be Betsey if it wasn’t a little bit unusual!)

Also, found a few V Day pieces that you could put in your home year round-

These chairs are from Mecox Gardens– definitely a bit more Valentines looking but aren’t they sweet!

This garden seat is also from Mecox- a popular home accessory right now

Tea cup candle from Tracy Porter– would make a great gift for that special someone!

This Swedish farm table from 1st Dibs make a great craft desk in a feminine studio or would look adorable even in a child’s room

Had to feature at least one Anthropologie find- the queen of girliness and charm. Love this little “Inside Out” bowl that you can purchase on their website.

I saw this Blu Dot chair in a magazine a while back and loved how inexpensive and modern looking it was.

This chair from Container Store is another inexpensive desk chair find- comes in a few other bold colors and is only $49!!

This houndstooth print pillow from Heals is only $40- what a bargain!

Ok..not really an inexpensive find but we LOVE this Venetian lamp from Jan Showers. So fabulous!
