Last month, Pantone announced THE color of 2014… Dazzling Blue. It is already being predicted to be the TOP color for women for Spring 2014.)

Does Dazzling Blue look familiar? The color has often been referred to as “Social Media Blue” and although it is not the same blue of Facebook, it falls pretty close. (Fun fact: Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, chose the brand’s color because he is color blind and blue is one of the only colors he sees in its true state.)

This bright and vibrant hue is showing up everywhere!

I am a sucker for anything Michael Kors and this purse would make such a fashion statement to any wardrobe.

With nail art becoming stylish again, I wonder if blue nails will make a comeback.

Without fail, every awards show ends up having one color that steals the night and last month’s Emmy Awards were no exception.

I love this contemporary twist on wallpaper.

I love spaces that are unafraid to push a specific color.  Plus, we have been eyeing these blue agate coasters for quite some time now.

Dazzling blue will make for a great accent color- it adds enough of a bold pop and is eye-catching.

I love how the casework is treated as the accent wall.

The artwork and accessories are so eclectic and fun but my favorite thing about this inspiration is the chandelier. The lighting treatment has a strong impact.

It will be interesting to see how this color creatively transforms designs in the coming months!

The Glamor of Gatsby

Posted By Nathan-Dallas | May 07, 2013 | 5 Comments | Category: Books, Celebs, Color, Decorating, Design Inspiration, Movie/TV Sets, Trends

When I was a senior in high school, one of the items on the required reading list was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.  After chapter 1, I was hooked.  It’s a beautiful story, and if you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it before you see the movie (scheduled to premier May 10th).  The descriptions of the life of the wealthy in the 1920′s is mesmerizing.

Gatsby Bookcover

Original book cover of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby

A life full of partying, prosperity, and feeling the need to be free from the constraints of what was deemed socially acceptable at the turn of the 1900th century brought around the Art Deco movement.  A call for new fashion, new architecture, and new furniture and home decor!  Immediately everything went streamline, architecturally as well as decor.  Geometric shapes, and bold colors were all the rage.

A real 1920′s beauty bedecked all in dazzling Cartier jewelry.

Baz Luhrmann is by far my favorite movie director and producer.  He can take a old classic story and turn it into something new and over the top like no one else.  You can totally see what I mean if you’ve ever watched Moulin Rouge, or Romeo and Juliet.  His adaptation of The Great Gatsby has once again totally hit the mark with his impeccable style and lavish ways of transforming something great, into something even greater.  If you ask me, I think he’s done a remarkable job defining the 1920′s era by putting a modern day spin on it.

Welcome to the party!  The outside movie set of the famous swimming pool/fountain party scene.  Looks like a blast!

Take a look at Gatsby’s bedroom.  The clean lines and no frills make it the perfect bedroom for such a dashingly dapper bachelor.

Daisy’s sitting room exudes femininity with all it’s pinks and blushing hues, accented by soft whites and golds.  I’m loving that patterned rug and long fringed throw over that side chair!

Even Tiffany and Co. has gotten into the spirit of the movie.  They’ve designed an entire collection devoted to Daisy, the leading female role in the movie.  If you visit their flagship store in NYC, you’ll find their famous window displays bedazzled with 1920′s glamour in  honor of the movie.

Still can’t get enough of that fabulous Art Deco style?  Take a gander at these gorgeous rooms!

I love the soft golden back drop of this room.  The ebony furniture pieces make a dramatic contrast against it.  The marble floor inlay is breath taking, and look at that console on the back wall!  I’m in love with the Greek Key motif in white that borders its edges!

One of my favorite pieces of furniture in a grand home like this one, is an entry table that sits in the center of a foyer.  It’s so stately!

Let’s face it, deep down, everybody wants a grand sweeping staircase like this to walk down every morning.  I know I sure do!

This Art Deco interior embodies the clean and simple shapes found in many period buildings.  Check out all that silver leafing on the ceiling!

This Parisian apartment designed in in the early 20′s is still fashionable today!  Just look at the shape of the cocktail table, and the gilded screen behind the sofa!

I’ve always been in love with these simple and sophisticated prints from the 1920′s.  These wallpapers are still a classic, even after 93 years!

So, if you haven’t bought your ticket yet, what are you waiting for?! This is definitely a movie you don’t want to miss on the silver screen!

Tonight I had another wonderful shopping experience at Target (much less to my husband’s chagrin).  Ben and I have always had opposing views on Tarjay (so much that it’s become a running joke around here) and I always get “the look” when I announce my departure for the red bullseye building of amazingness.

Ben thinks it’s out of the ordinary that I go to Target so often and not to mention, spend hours upon hours there (is it so bad that Target is one of my hobbies?) He doesn’t understand why I can’t go to Walmart (it’s that darn lighting) or The Dollar Store (just not enough options) and price compare every single one of my toiletries…or better yet he wonders- “why do you even need all those toiletries?  You need contact disinfectant AND solution??”

But alas, I admit, Target for me is the experience.  It’s the fact that I can toiletry shop, clothes shop, accessory shop and home shop (while picking up my groceries).  Target is probably one of my top ten favorite places in the world (it’s a close tie with Paris) and it’s become a family outing for my sisters, mom and I to “go to Target” on the weekend.  I mean come on, who doesn’t need stuff that they really don’t need?

So on each Target visit, I manage to discover SOMETHING new that I can take home with me and prove to Ben why Target is so great- whether it’s Nate Berkus’ new home line, a nifty pet lint brush, or disposable hand towels, Target is my place!

Tonight I discovered Threshold.  Maybe it’s an old brand there, maybe it’s brand spanking new, all I know is that this home brand never jumped out at me before like it did tonight.  I LOVED the concept of each one of their items.  They are the perfect pieces for an apartment or a smaller first home. My only complaint would be that I wish I could enlarge their pillows and end tables two or three sizes. They were quite small and really short, but the designs were so fun, I had to share!

I loved the design of the white mirror below.  Also, the navy and white throw pillow with the greek key tape trim pattern was so chic!  Like I said though, I like my pillows BIG and if this pillow was a 22″ or a 24″ square instead, I would have scooped it up in a heartbeat.  But really who am I to complain, custom pillows with tape trim in this design can be a pretty penny in general, so I was really impressed that they offered this design at such a low price (no matter what size it was)!

The colors and patterns that they use are so fun.  I loved the little white bird canisters and chevron storage bins.

I would totally use these mirrored cabinets or tables if they were taller but they were just too short to be level with a regular height mattress or sofa arm.  I could see them being used in a smaller space like an apartment or a stylish kids room.

I thought this coral lamp was really punchy and could bring a lot of energy to a room-

(notice how they also have tape trimmed lamp shades too for all of your naked lamps at home)

I thought these metal tables were cute for only $69!  They reminded me a lot of Arteriors’ hammered metal accent tables which are a lot more expensive.

Ok how adorable is this coral x bench (WITH contrast white cord included already)?! Hello faux custom! I wish I had a place for this…

And this geometric painted tray….sorry for the horrible photo with the lovely Armstrong tiles in the background a la Target…but this one was an amazing find because it can be so hard to find a good tray (a square one especially).  I could see this on an upholstered ottoman (posing as a coffee table) with lots of pretty accessories gathered in it….books, bowl, vase….I can see it now!

Hope you enjoyed the new Threshold line!  Collections like these make shopping for contact solution so much more enjoyable! ;)

In recent years, there’s been a resurgence of all things mid-century modern.  And I love it!  One of my favorite mid-century modern classics is the Sputnik light fixture.  Its starburst shape with arms of irregular length make this chandelier a seriously one of a kind light fixture.  I am DYING to get a brass sputnik for my guest bedroom and I’ve been searching Ebay like crazy. The right Sputnik (perfect size) can be hard to find!

Above is a brushed brass fixture, that was modeled after an original.  This particular fixture is quite large, and has 36 lights!

What is “Sputnik” anyways?  Sputnik was actually the worlds’ first artificial Earth satellite.  It was launched on October 4, 1957 by the Soviet Union.  Sputnik started the Space Age, which introduced an influx of all new modernized technology, furniture, and motifs in the world of interiors.  Above is an artist’s rendition of the original Sputnik satellite in orbit around Earth.

Sputnik pendants come in all shapes and sizes.  Some are installed closer to the ceiling, like a flush mount, while others have several suspension wires that connect at the top.  Below is another version of the chandelier, but with a modern day touch.

In a recent project we’re working on, I found a fantastic vintage Sputnik inspired chandelier at White Elephant Antiques.  We’re using it in our client’s master bedroom.  Its black arms with silver ends really make this piece stand out.  It’s truly a fabulous spin-off of the original version.

I really adore this particular fixture.  I just love how its shape is more flatt, and not as spherical.  It fans out over the table, and acts as a great visual focus point in this dining-

This kitchen has integrated a Sputnik chandelier over the petite grand piano to help define it as a more elegant area, separate from the working areas in the kitchen.

The New Queen of Bling

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Sep 26, 2012 | 2 Comments | Category: Celebs, Color, Fashion, Gifts, Trends

Fashionista and trend setter are just two ways to describe this new Queen of Bling!  If you haven’t already heard of this outstanding jewelry maker, there is a very good chance that you have unknowingly seen several celebrities wearing her fab colorful jewelry on the red carpet lately.  She is EVERYWHERE!

I have to say that I was so out of the Kendra loop until last weekend when my friends Lindsey and Beth gave me some of her earrings for my birthday (there is a Kendra Scott store in the West Village, here in Dallas apparently).  They were so adorbs that I had to put them on immediately and wear them out the rest of the night! It was such a fun surprise of a gift, and I should have known something was up when Lindsey called asking what my favorite color was earlier that day.  You see, Kendra doesn’t just make jewelry in a couple of colors, she has a RAINBOW spectrum of options! The colors in her jewelry are even good inspiration for a room design..I’m loving the green onyx and orange coral.

A little bit about Ms. Kendra…she got her start back in 2002, making her gorgeous creations out of the spare bedroom in her Austin, Texas home.  Today, you can find her fabulous earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets in three of her boutiques which are located in Dallas, Austin, and Beverly Hills.  You can also come across her items at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Lord and Taylor or purchase her beautiful bling on her website.

Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara in a pair a Kendra’s gorgeous chandelier style earrings.

Heiress Paris Hilton showing off a stunning pink jade necklace.

Kelly Osbourne dazzles in these show-stopping lapis and 14K yellow gold earrings

One of the things I love about Kendra’s web site is the “color bar” feature.  Here, you can create your own custom pieces with endless possibilities!  What a marvelous way to complete an outfit, by making your own Kendra Scott custom jewelry!  Below are just a few that I made on her web site that are sure to be showstoppers!

My husband gave his groosmen “themey” cufflinks last summer as gifts at our wedding…but I think Adrian or Geoff would have looked much more chic sporting Kendra’s teal cufflinks! (Ben however, might beg to differ :)

Take a look at a few of the other jewelry pieces that are available on her website!  With her large selection of semi-precious stones set in gold or silver,  there’s something to surely strike everyone’s fancy-

The opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics, was indeed quite a show.  We certainly enjoyed watching all the festivities, especially the Queen’s awesome entrance into the stadium! Another great highlight was watching the parade of champions.  This year’s summer games ushered in some fantastic inspiration from fashion.  Fashion can be a marvelous muse for creating an unforgettable interior space.  Here are some of our favorite inspirations from this year’s Summer Games:

Cobalt, Orange & White: Holland

This year, Holland totally rocked their bold color pallet of cobalt, orange, navy, and white.  Each athlete was exquisitely tailored in these designer outfits.  A wonderful touch and homage to their homeland’s national flower, can be seen here with a tulip pinned to each athlete’s lapel.  These colors are a fresh and trendy way to spice up any interior.  The contrast that these colors make next to each other creates a statement that is sure to impress.

Mixing patterns with these exciting  colors works well, and adds even more look to this stimulating mix of hues.

These deep navy walls with accents of orange is striking and at the same time, elegant and fun.

This luxurious cashmere blanket by Hermes is a definite must have statement maker.  The unmistakable, classic Hermes orange and white will not go unnoticed!  Also, these orange and cobalt painted vases would be fabulous on any mantle.

Aqua, Sunshine Yellow, & White: Sweden

Sweden’s athletes were definitely noticed at this year’s opening ceremonies.  Their bright yellow and aqua stripes with white pants were definitely “spot on” for summer fashion.  Even their sneakers made a statement, blue with yellow laces. Great attention to detail.

This delicious dining room makes great use of yet another bold color pallet.  Beautiful, bright bamboo chairs in a cheery lemon yellow are definitely a focal point.  The black accents of the doors and the chevron pattern rug help add a touch of chic to this fun dining space.

Add some colorful light and sparkle to your space with this amazing yellow chandelier from Cyan.  This piece brings fun antique whimsy with its classic shape that is sure to liven up any space.

Check out this brightly colored room! The yellow sofas and bright blue pillows are festively summer, and help give this room its own signature look.

Kelly Green & White: Nigeria

Take a look at these fabulous white and green outfits worn by Nigerian Olympic competitors.  Kelly green makes a luscious color statement against bright white.

This gorgeous green upholstered head board transforms this bedroom into a tropical retreat.  The simple bedding with a classic green stripe is simple and refined, making a calm compliment to the statement making headboard.  The bedside lamps with a clear glass base add interest to the room, without taking away from the clean, crisp feel of the space.

Another clean color pallet of green and white makes this living room feel swank.  The modern floor lamp and glass top cocktail table make this space feel expensive, without going over-the-top.

The metallic accent pillows and chrome side table really adds some glamour and flash to this tropical living room.  The palm tree is also a great touch of natural color.  We also like the white cow-hide rug turned on an angle under the cocktail table.  Definitively chic and modern!

Red, White & Blue: U.S.A

Who better than to dress our American Athletes than Ralph Lauren? This classic American preppy look was a fantastic representation of fashion directly from the USA.  Navy blazers, white trousers and knee length skirts with berets and ties definitely has an Ivy League spin.  Feel like standing up straight and saluting the flag?  With and outfit like this, I sure do!

Using red judiciously is key in this bedroom.  Red is a powerful color, and helps define the headboard, bedding and bench.  The gold pendant fixture definitely adds a designer touch to the room.

Adding adventurous patterns makes these living rooms come alive.

This patriotic painted chest with gold accents demands attention.  Finding unique furniture such as this, really adds a great deal of character to any room, and is sure to serve as a conversation piece!

Neon Glow

Posted By Emily-Dallas | Jul 31, 2012 | 3 Comments | Category: Fashion, Furniture, Magazines, Trends

Neon’s are everywhere this season from fashion to home decor. It’s impossible not to notice everyone wearing colored jeans and celebrities at movie premiers in gorgeous neon dresses. I love this guide to “doing neon right”.

Just the other day, my husband asked me why I was still living in the 80′s…really, what do you even say to that?

{Black Tie neon}

{Casual evening neon}

{Street style neon}

These colors aren’t just in fashion, but home decor as well! Neons add a touch of vibrancy and are a fun way to liven up your home.

Here are a few ways to add a little neon to your life without going over the top-

This yellow bar stool from ABC Home is the perfect color to mix with grays, blacks, and whites. I also love the idea of this mixed with turquoise!

This dining room from House Beautiful mixes bold colors with classic black and whites. Johnathan Adler did a wonderful job mixing mid-century modern pieces with funky yellow Chinese Chippendale Chairs (and turquoise drapes to boot!)

This dramatic yellow mirror from Horchow would be perfect in an entryway.. Maybe with some gray and white striped wallpaper and a Lucite table underneath!

How funky and mod!  Orange wall clock from CB2

Pairing turquoise blue and bold orange is the perfect neon color palette. I love how they toned down all the neon by adding in neutrals like the black and white lamp and light taupe paint color (same rules as in fashion!) Houzz

A bright yellow sofa with funky eclectic pillows paired with dark gray walls creates an airy, perky atmosphere! Houzz

Don’t you just love these hot pink chairs paired with the dark wood table?

The rug in this space ties everything together. All the colors from the rug are spread throughout the bedroom and creates a cohesive look.  Notice the neon green chandelier!  Houzz

I’ve always been a big fan of Stray Dog Design’s Artichoke lamp..it comes in wild neon colors like pink, chartreuse, and turquoise!

And you thought colored bathtubs were so out of date in the 40′s…well they are back! This neon green tub screams for attention in this small white and black bathroom. Pinterest

This movie pool sofa is perfect for the college student living in a small apartment looking to brighten up their space.

Now this is the literal meaning of neon! Back lighting a dark toned painting with neon colored light creates a new story for the painting to tell. Elle Decor

These beautimous bedside chests in lacquered orange paint from 1st Dibbs paired with brown leather drawers is a unique pop of color that would look perfect in a masculine bedroom.

This basement makeover from House Beautiful is so fun. There are so many wonderful colors that can brighten anyone’s mood.

So what do you say? Are you a neon lover yet?

This year at the Dallas Home and Gift Market there were so many amazing finds it was hard to pick just ten! Keeping up with current and upcoming design trends is vital to the design process to ensure that we can make your home lovely and something no one will forget. Here are a few of my favorite design trends at market that are sure to knock your socks off!

#1- Bright colored lacquered furniture-

Pops of color are on the cutting edge of design this season. Reviving a traditional style chest by adding blue lacquered paint gives new life to this piece at the Ambari showroom-

#2- Tassels and ropes!  (see our post on this topic from the other day)-

This iron style knotted chair and demilune table are so unique and charming! Drinking your morning coffee in this lil chair will definetly start your day off great. Both are from Currey and Co

#3- Dramatic screens-

Screens are great for so many things. They can act as a room divider, a piece of art or sculpture (behind chairs or a sofa), or fill an awkward corner or long wall. My favorite screens are mirrored or metallic ones with lots of visual interest (like this stunning one from Design Directions)

#4- Colored glass-

Looking for something unique? We have the right pieces for you.  These beauties are displayed at one of our most favorite showrooms, Taylors on Ten.  They have a whole “glass” section that will make your heart race! Don’t even get me started on their glass knot pendant light!

#5- Natural lamps-

I love a good natural lamp.  At market, we noticed tons of lamps made out of natural materials such as marble, granite, driftwood, and shells.  This white marble lamp by Ralph Lauren was also at the TOT showroom.

#6- Graphic patterns mixed with bold colors-

Graphic motifs such as chevron patterns paired with vivid colors are THE it factor (found in the Imax Showroom). Using one of these ideas in any space will definitely keep you on trend.

#7- Color combination- orange and gray-

I am using this color combo in Ben’s mancave as we speak and I have to say that I keep seeing this palette more and more lately (especially at market)! Global Views always has the best vignettes at the show and their use of this color combo was truly stunning.

#8- Metallics-

Metallics, Metallics, Metallics!! I can’t say it enough! These gold side tables/benches with wooden details (found at Design Directions) are the perfect accent for any space. The great thing about metallics is that they can go with anything and add that extra bit of sparkle that most rooms need.

A gorgeous round mirror from Ambari-

A bling worthy vignette from Global Views-

#9- Embroidered Pillows-

We love the use of color on these dramatic embroidered pillows.  This extra layer of texture really helps take the pillows to another level!

#10- Framed textiles-

This amazing Indian styled scarf in a frame can be a great starting point for a room. LOVE the orange and pink combo here.  This particular one was found at Taylors on Ten.

#11- Faux fur

Last but not least.. OHHH the uniqueness! Being different and standing out is right up this chaise lounge’s alley. It’s purrrfectly pettable with its fuzzy upholstery. You most definitely won’t have to worry about your neighbor having this! Spotted at Cyan Design.

Spring has sprung! Besides getting ready for the beautiful weather, we’ve been busy asking our favorite Dallas showrooms about the top fabric trends for spring. This is what they said is big for 2012:

1. Ethnic/ Tribal Prints
Spring is a time to be playful, and these fun designs have been almost impossible to keep in stock.

2. Children’s Rooms
Grownups shouldn’t have all the fun- infants through teens are all enjoying the new designs this spring, especially the new line from Lulu DK that has been flying out of the Schumacher showroom.

3. Outdoor
Not too surprising is the popularity of outdoor fabrics.  Although we love spending time in our homes, there’s nothing like sprucing up a patio or porch for the upcoming warm weather!

4. Orange and Blue
Every season has its perfect palette, and this year, showrooms have noticed the popularity of bright orange and blue hues. Seen in almost every popular line from Modern Colors to Alexa Hampton, these colors are everywhere!

5. Colored Leather
One unexpected trend is the popularity of colored leather. Used for all types of spaces from bedrooms to offices to living rooms, this fabric is a fun little surprise, especially in bold colors.

Bonus: The anticipated trend for 2013? Kelly Green, and lots of it!
