Is there any field famed designer Nate Berkus has not tried to conquer? There is no need to answer that because we all know he is popping up everywhere. Oprah has given him his own talk show, he has a bestselling book, and still has time to manage a firm. Host, author, designer- he wears many hats and can now add to that list because his new fall line for Target just hit stores!

This post is paying homage to all his career roles.

He has a great approach to how he conquers residential design. His philosophy is that the rooms should tell the story of who the owners are and reflect their personalities.

Imagine working at his Chicago firm in this open environment!

This just seems like the coolest space to make dinner in each evening. I love that he made the industrial finishes appear so warm.

The play with color, lighting, and shape makes this bathroom very fresh and fun.

The modern art pieces selected really help exagerrate the angles and length of the living room. And who else can make a silver bean bag not seem tacky?

I love the mix of textures and rich tones. The different patterns all compliment each other to create something visually interesting.

I am probably a little biased since I am a sucker for yellow but I wish this was my master walk-in closet!

You were warned about the yellow! Berkus also has fabric lines with fabricut and calico.

I can’t get over this print and color combination!

This honeycomb wall art is part of his new line for Target. Hexagons may turn out to be the shape of the year!

If you are looking for something riskier, this gold and black pillow for Target would do the trick to add edge to your room!

Since Nate is constantly reinventing himself, pushing his talent and clearly not afraid to try new things I cannot wait to see what he does next!

Last month, Pantone announced THE color of 2014… Dazzling Blue. It is already being predicted to be the TOP color for women for Spring 2014.)

Does Dazzling Blue look familiar? The color has often been referred to as “Social Media Blue” and although it is not the same blue of Facebook, it falls pretty close. (Fun fact: Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, chose the brand’s color because he is color blind and blue is one of the only colors he sees in its true state.)

This bright and vibrant hue is showing up everywhere!

I am a sucker for anything Michael Kors and this purse would make such a fashion statement to any wardrobe.

With nail art becoming stylish again, I wonder if blue nails will make a comeback.

Without fail, every awards show ends up having one color that steals the night and last month’s Emmy Awards were no exception.

I love this contemporary twist on wallpaper.

I love spaces that are unafraid to push a specific color.  Plus, we have been eyeing these blue agate coasters for quite some time now.

3b1454f505b6

Dazzling blue will make for a great accent color- it adds enough of a bold pop and is eye-catching.

I love how the casework is treated as the accent wall.

The artwork and accessories are so eclectic and fun but my favorite thing about this inspiration is the chandelier. The lighting treatment has a strong impact.

It will be interesting to see how this color creatively transforms designs in the coming months!

Jan

We recently spoke with Dallas designer Jan Showers after blogging about her latest book, “Glamorous Retreats”.  Here are some of the highlights from our talk:

Why interior design?

I have always loved houses and the way they are designed fascinates me. My mother had amazing taste- she brought me up to love interior design, antiques, and color.

What inspires you?

Travel, nature, art, books, fashion and people.

Was there a moment in your career you knew you had made it and established yourself as a top designer?

I felt very validated the first time I had a project published in a major magazine. To say that I think of myself as a top designer and have it made is really not part of my thought process- I try to do the best work possible with as much rigor and dedication as I am capable of- If I do that and my client is happy, then I am pleased with my work and consider myself a successful designer.

Is there a field you have not covered that you still wish to explore?

I am eager to do a fabric/wall-covering collection and that is definitely in the works! More news about that soon!

Your new book is all about vacation homes, what is your dream vacation spot?

I always cry when I leave St. Barth’s- It’s the top of the world to me- So I guess it’s my dream vacation. Of course, I love New York, Paris, London, Venice, Lake Como, and summer in Montecito, California.

When you start a new project, what is the first thing you choose?

I would typically choose the antiques and art because they are so important to any room. The rug is a close second.

Complete this sentence: No vacation home is complete without

Comfort.

Do you have an item in your home, not of your own design, that you feel best represents you?

I adore my dining room and everything in it at our house outside of Dallas- The chandelier by Barovier (designed by Andre Arbus), the Lotus XVI style chairs in their original pale golden yellow, the Donald Kaufman #12 paint on the walls and the very “Sister Parish” buffet I found almost 20 years ago in Paris. None of these are my own design- they are all antiques and I think they represent what I love the most personally.

What do you see as the biggest or most common mistake homeowners make?

Choosing furniture that is the wrong scale- usually too large for the room.

What is currently your favorite color to work with?

Platinum gray mixed with gold metallics and almost any warm gray because it creates the look of natural stone and everything goes with it.

What current trend do you think we will see fade within the next few years?

Drapery, pillows and upholstery all matching in vibrant colors.

What current trend are you in love with?

The undecorated look- not sure it’s a trend, but it’s what I try to achieve- a home that reflects the personality and interests of the owner and one that does not look like a stage set or a hotel room. Hotels are referenced to me a lot by clients and I always tell them that a hotel can be amazing, but even when it is incredible, it can never look personal and truly lived in.

And finally, what is the best piece of design advice you have ever been given and would pass along to someone?

Make sure you truly understand your client and then give them a vision of what their home will ultimately look like. When you both have the same vision based on their needs and desires, you will have a wonderful finished product.

My other piece of advice is about eye level lighting- overhead lighting is used to age actors and actresses- always be sure there is plenty of eye level lighting- lamps, floor lamps and sconces- in every room.

We thank Jan for her insight and time!

Jan’s book is now on sale and can be ordered from amazon:

I’ve always been a fan of Pier 1 Imports.  Growing up as a small town boy, there weren’t too many places to chose from when it came to interior decor.  But, Waco did have a Pier 1 (and I believe they still do).  It was one of my favorite stores to go into growing up.  That’s right.  I could have cared less for the toy stores and the sports places, I wanted to go to Pier 1!

So, when Pier 1 contacted us to see if we would be interested in a $250 designer challenge to introduce a touch of autumn into an interior space, I was overly eager to accept the challenge, and get started!

Store Front

As soon as I wrapped up at the office for the day, I headed straight to the closest Pier 1 I knew of!

Fall Table Setting Supplies

Of course they have all of their new fall items out on display, including everything form fabulous pumpkins & fall leaves, to napkin rings and wine glasses.  All of which are available in every rustic autumn color you could imagine!

Chic Mirrored Furniture and Screen

I really liked this set up of a mirrored chest with the “blinged” out crystal and metallic owls!  Check out that divider screen!  Perfect for separating a single space into two, or, an interesting way to fill up some area and add dimension to a bare wall.

Dorothy Draper Style Chest

When I turned the corner and saw this, I was reminded how fashion forward Pier 1 is.  Dorothy Drapery style chests are a highly sought after commodity in the design world, and very few people can afford the real McCoy.   Pier 1 has created an excellent imitation of the Dorothy Draper “Espana Chest”, and check out that awesome price!

Pillow Wall

Accent pillows are a perfect way to spice up a sofa or a bed.  It’s also an easy way to create a color palate change that won’t break the bank.  With the endless color, pattern, and textures that Pier 1 offers with their pillow selection, you’ll definitely be able to find what you’re looking for!

Candles and Smell Good Wall

Who doesn’t love candles?  Pier 1 has an assortment of candles that come in every color under the sun to compliment any decor, and they have the best scents ever!

Clearance Items

Another great thing about Pier 1 is that every store always has a clearance section where you can really find some great stuff!  These prices just can’t be beat!

Now, back to the challenge…. I quickly decided after I arrived, that my front living room needed the most amount of attention, and is usually the first room guests enter when they come over.  My next step was figuring out how I was going to choose from so many decor options!

Checking Out with Candise

After I made my selections, the fabulous Candise helped me bring it all to the cash wrap, and began to ring up my items.  Thanks for all your awesome and friendly help Candise!

Below are the “before” shots of my front living room.  Notice that it doesn’t really have much life to it, and nothing really matches.

Before2

Before1

While I was at the store, I decided that I wanted to go outside of the box a little.  Sometimes, when you’re readying your home or a room for a new season, you don’t necessarily have to go with the obvious choices of decor.  Which in this case, would be the traditional fall leaves and gourds.  I chose to go a little more of a sophisticated route, choosing items that incorporated a fall color palate.  Here are the “after” photos:

Clock

How awesome is this over-sized clock?!  The moment I saw it, I knew it would be the perfect focal point for the room!

Pillow Close Up

After4

I chose a rich rust colored velvet pillow to introduce an autumn color pallet.  This is accented by a striped velvet pillow with different shades of orange, and also shades of blue.  I always try to add an unexpected accent color when I can.  In this case, it ended up being a deep cobalt blue.  That shade of blue is really hot right now, and I just had to incorporate it!  Blue is also the complimentary color to orange, so I felt that it was an appropriate choice.  Just the pillows alone added much needed life to this room!  I also added a cobalt glass candle stick and ivory candle on one of the clustered tables in the center of the room.  I still can’t believe I found all this great stuff for only $250!

After I was finished with adding all my new wonderful autumn inspired items to my living room, I sat down at my desk, and realized that it too came from Pier 1!  Even the chair and cushion!  I guess it goes to show, I’m definitely a fan of Pier 1 Imports.

Desk

Be sure to head to your nearest Pier 1 store, and find some fall decor of your own to spice up your space!

Looking for a great way to get some awesome Pier One items in your house for FREE?  Email Emily your favorite Pier One accessory at emily@materialgirlsblog.com for your chance to win a $50 gift card to Pier One to deck out your pad for free!  The winner will be chosen at random.

Good Luck!

If there are two things I completely obsess over, it is great design and celebrity gossip. I too often get carried away catching up on the lifestyles of the rich and famous. So naturally,  I was thrilled to discover (via Elle Decor) Cameron Diaz had enlisted Kelly Wearstler (our idol) to bring a taste of Hollywood to her Manhattan apartment. Consider it, West Village meets West Coast.

Cameron just took on the role of Artistic Director for the fashion-accessories label Pour La Victoire and so she already knew the space needed color. A lot of the signature pieces in the living room, including the stunning chandelier, are vintage.

Wearstler considered Diaz as more of a collaborator in this design rather than a client since she was very involved with the process.

The rooms reflect her personality- “innately sexy but not overly flashy” (-KW).  Lighting plays such an important role in this design story and the richness of the emerald green cabinets, along with the mirrored walls definitely give off that movie star vibe.

The bedroom really showcases the glamour and true to high-end couture, no detail is overlooked. Even the chest drawers are lined with raw black silk!

I love the glass tiling and metallic finishes used in the master bathroom!

If this guest bathroom does not scream luxe, nothing will! The apartment transitions from rich tones in gold and green to subtler palettes reminiscent of 1970′s fashion and I am sure Team Kelly and Cameron have now created new trends to be inspired by and follow!

I think it is fair to say that fall is FINALLY creeping up on us here in Texas. Even though summer is fading, we can still sit here and dream of lavish vacation spots thanks to Jan Showers’ latest book, Glamorous Retreats!  A follow-up to the bestselling Glamorous Rooms, her latest work features interiors from locales across North America. The pages take you everywhere from the beaches of Nantucket to the lodges in Colorado down to Arizona ranches. Glamorous Retreats is that signature coffee table book or staple needed for your study collection that everyone should just go ahead and pre-order!

One of my favorites, Michael Kors, (yes, THE legendary American fashion designer) wrote “Design like Jan’s fuses great taste and an expert eye with the reality of life as it is actually lived.”

Jan Showers has the ability to blend Hollywood high fashion with vintage Paris; it’s as if you are walking around Paris in the 1700′s without losing any of the contemporary aesthetic.

harbour island 34 (2)

In this Harbor Island getaway the transition from one period to the next seems effortless.  She has said that she always wants her rooms to look like they happened over a long period of a time, which is why these designs become so timeless. I love how she is able to introduce so many different textures and keep the space feeling cohesive.

I love that she mixes the elegant with the eclectic in a way where this rustic room still feels personal and inviting.

Subtle glamour is the key. As Jan puts it, “think Audrey Hepburn in capri pants.” That really is the perfect metaphor to describe these gorgeous settings!

On sale October 1, we are now adding Showers’ Glamorous Retreats to our guilty pleasures list!

Tantalizing Tablescapes

Posted By Nathan-Dallas | Aug 23, 2013 | No Comments | Category: Dining Rooms, Holiday

Ok, I’ll admit it… One of my favorite things in life is being domestic.  And my favorite part about being domestic is designing and decorating my home.  So of course, this includes decorating my kitchen and dining tables!  Some times I’ll even host a party, or invite people over for dinner, just for the sole purpose to have a reason to put together a new and exciting tablescape!  (If you’re wondering, yes, it drives my partner Tim nuts).  Part of this comes from my love to entertain people, as well as cook.  I’ve always enjoyed dining, weather it’s with friends and family at a restaurant, or at home, and it’s always way more fun when the atmosphere is exciting and pretty!

I was so, so, so, SUPER excited when Emily and I were asked to be a part of the 2013 Kappa Kappa Kappa Gamma Tablescapes hosted by the Kappa Dallas Alumnae Association!  This year, the event’s special guest is James Farmer, the Editor-At-Large for Southern Living Magazine!  Along with being an author, he is also a floral and interior designer, and garden-to-table lifestyle expert.  The theme for this year’s tablescapes is From Garden to Table.  I absolutely cannot wait to get started on this project!  All the tables are always over the top, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what fabulous things all the designers come up with this year!

Purple Party Soire

I’ve noticed that purple tones are making a big splash.  How would you like to have a little purple party soire at this table setting?  I know I sure would!  I’m more than obsessed with the purple agates at each place setting, and the amber/gold toned stem ware and dinner plates are totally gorgeous!  I also love how this ostentatious floral arrangement drapes across the table diagonally.

Summer into Fall

This table setting is a perfect mix of summer and fall.  The bight green and white daisies coupled with fiery reds, oranges, and yellows makes for an excellent setting for a goodbye summer / hello fall dinner get together!

Thanksgiving

For those of us who lean a little more to the traditional side when it comes to table dressing, check out this table decked out in harvest colors.  I love the white vases with artichoke bases holding a spray of golden wheat.  The silk autumn leaves hanging from the light fixture above add a little touch of whimsy.  Excellent for Thanksgiving!  Now Im craving turkey and dressing!

Orange and Pink

How fun would it be to lounge around this table for a fun luncheon with girlfriends while sipping on sangria and mai tais?  I’m in love with all the energy this color combo gives off!

Seaside

The Little Mermaid has long been one of my favorite movies…. and when I saw this table, I couldn’t help but want to sit down and enjoy dinner with Ariel and her entourage of  ocean dwelling friends!  I love the use of those gorgeous pearl colored shells used as vases to hold simple flower arrangements.

Beach

Here’s another fantastic sea side set up!  Any seafood meal would taste better if you were eating it at this table!  Check out those awesome silver plate chargers!  The rustic style place-mats and wine glasses, mixed with the blue and silver color palate make a beautiful contrast.

Christmas

Decorating my dining table for the holiday season is always fun.  I typically go with the more traditional red/green/gold color scheme, but this year, I think I’m going to go for something more like this!  I’m obsessed with the non-traditional colors here, but with traditional items like the ornaments and frosted mistletoe.  How pretty are those blue tones with the gold and green?!

Spring

I can’t wait to put together a table like this one!  I think it would be perfect for a tea party, or a mother’s day luncheon!  You can never go wrong when it comes to pink, gold and white on china!  I really like how the china patterns are all mixed here too!

I’ve got to tell everyone out there about one of my favorite stores…. H&M!  The first time I had ever heard of it, or seen one, was while I was studying abroad in Spain the summer before my senior year at college.  I know, I know.  You’re probably thinking, “WHAT?! He had never heard of H&M before?!” However, keep in mind that I’m a country boy, and went to college at Baylor University, only 25 minutes from my home town.  So, needless to say, the only real shopping experience that equates to shopping mall doesn’t have much to offer.  Let alone something fabulous like H&M….. And, the best part about it is that it is SUPER affordable!  (and yes, if you’re wondering, I still have my first purchase from H&M in Spain, a shirt and some pants). Boy was I disappointed when I got back to states to find out that the clothes I brought back from H&M in Europe, were the same things on the rack in the stores here.  Oh well.

HM

About a year or two ago, H&M finally moved to Dallas!  Praise be to the fashion gods and my wallet! And now, (hold your horses, it gets better)…. they now carry a home goods line!!! Have I died and gone to fashion and home decor heaven?!

RoseGoldandBlack

You just can’t beat the all time classic black and white.  Ever.  It never will never go out of style, whether in your home or in your closet.  I love this little twist of rose-gold for an accent color.  It’s a little more exciting than the normal yellow gold or silver you might expect.  A great way to mix up a classic in a fun chic way! ‘Im completely loving the textured black leather accent pillow and the rose-gold candle holder!

Fall

Don’t forget that even though it’s hotter than blue blazes outside, Autumn is right around the corner! (and can’t come fast enough for those of us who live in Texas!)  When it does finally cool down, you’ll find me curled up in this fabulous Native American print throw blanket and lounging against that awesome cable knit pillow.  Chances are, I’ll have all three of the “Love”, “Joy”, and “Peace” candles burning at the same time, pretending I’ve got my own little chic campfire going on right in my living room!

Gold

This little number says “Watch out boys!”  The fierce look of black and gold is timeless, and definitively screams glamour and power all at the same time!

Emerald

They’ve even got bath accessories!  I’m loving the clean ivory ceramic containers with French lingo scrawled in a beautiful script.  I totally don’t speak French, but all of this is definitely “Oooh La La!”
