When Yellow Met Gray
Wednesday, August 05, 2009 | Category: Color, Design Inspiration

…or what I should say, is when I met this yellow & gray pillow because I seem to keep running into it!
I was at Target the other day, when I was first introduced to the pillow:

Then I happen to see it again in this room:

And then I happen to run into it again here:

All in a week’s time and coincidentally coming off the heels of my recent post, “Stings Like A Bee” in which I blogged about yellow + black. I’d say a little less sting but I quite like it. The paler yellow, even a bit mustard-y, with gray is softer, less intense. So here in these rooms, yellow meets gray:

That’s a lot of yellow & gray! A bit overdone, wouldn’t you say…

Love it!!! Is that pillow dwell for target?

Yes! It’s the DwellStudio collection at Target. (Pillow is only $24.99) I know you like Peonies, right? They have lots of other cute pillows, too… (Click on the Target link I highlited, you’ll see the pillow, click on “View Collection” under the pillow pic.)

somehow you forgot the prettiest gray & yellow room of all time
http://maison21.blogspot.com/2009/01/so-wong-its-right-finally-m21-talks.html
seriously though- it’s easy to talk a client into gray, but yellow always seems to be an uphill battle, and i’ve been blessed with exactly *one* client brave enough agree to bright yellow and gray. both the client and i were ecstatic with the result- it might not be ‘the prettiest room of all time’ (i was kidding. kinda), but it might be my personal favorite…
(i eye that dwell pillow every time i’m at target, btw).

I posted on a beautiful yellow and gray bedroom done for the Atlanta Symphony Showhouse this strong – the designer was Alison Womack, and the room was really stunning. I was not aware at the time that it was a trendy choice, but the palette in the room and the shots of yellow were subtle and beautifully done, which gave it a classic feel.

I love grey + any primary color. How do you feel about grey and royal blue? It’s a favorite color combo of mine…

I have this pillow! I feel in love w/ it and bought 2, but honestly, I have the hardest time pairing it w/ sheets and other decorative items. The yellow is a tough color to match.

I have two of these Dwell pillows on a couch paired with white quilted Hotel Collection smaller square pillows. I needed a punch of color in a room that wasn’t really decorated yet. These look great, were inexpensive and are suprisingly durable. I’ve washed the covers a few times and they’ve withstood dog and husband naps quite well. When your to-do decorating list overwhelms you, changing the scene with inexpensive pillows can keep you sane!

Dear Jill,
For a slightly toned down version of yellow and gray, see this photo on the Calico Corners website:
http://www.calicocorners.com/category/landingpage/silverliningfabrics.do
It features fabrics of a soft candlelight yellow and a platinum gray (slightly taupe). These are very livable colors that are not too strong, but still in that same family. The trick with gray is to find a shade that doesn’t look too corporate or commercial. The yellow helps take it into territory that’s definitely residential.
Best,
Jan

I have that pillow too. Yellow and gray has been one of my favorite color combinations this whole year. So of course, when I saw it I had to get one!

Great photos! I really love this color combination – it’s more modern & so much softer than yellow & black.

I HAVE THAT PILLOW TOO! hahahah. I see it everywhere as well, but it certainly doesn’t keep me from continuing to own it. I work as an interior designer at Lucy and Company and we have been using yellow and gray all other the place! It’s very fashion forward, and surprisingly we have had young girls come in wanting the color combo, they are so ahead of their time now-a-days, aren’t they?
I just stumbled on your blog and really love it, I will return!

I love this color combination! Bliss Living Home has a beautiful bedding set in these colors too. So glad to have found your site!

Very sophisticated combination – check this same pairing out at creativemontage.com – it’s their home page combination! Love your site!
