Orange + Black

Keeping with the spirit of Halloween, the colors orange and black look fabulous together year round…

2

Orange wallcovering with black trim and black framed pictures.

3

A balanced room with orange as an accent: the chair seat cushion, the orange side chair, a few orange throw pillows and a mix of black & white drapery panels, an area rug, and a pillow.

Orange walls, a black lampshade, orange throw pillows, black background on the artwork, orange ottoman, dark wood, and a few black accessories = the perfect mix of orange + black.

5

Pretty in orange and black: orange background color on the wallcovering with a few black accents, table lamp base and bedding.

6hoto

Modern take on orange and black: orange bedding + black walls with orange accents.

7

Retro glam: orange grasscloth wallcovering and black textured window treatments mixed in with a pair of retro orange covered chairs.

8

Eclectic orange:  artsy orange screen in front of a black marble fireplace.

9

A dark floored entry with orange globe lighting.

These orange + black rooms surely don’t scream Halloween (no pun intended).

Halloween Houses

Hope many of you are out enjoying the Halloween festivities!  Thought I would share a few pictures of homes decorated for Halloween that I took this past week while staying at my family’s house on Balboa Island in Newport Beach.  Many of the homes on this small, quaint island were decorated for Halloween.  I was hoping to walk around and take more pictures but only managed to get a few.  In the spirit of the island, everything from storefronts to island cottages to streets were decorated for Halloween…I will try to take more come Christmas time, when even the boats are decked out in holiday lights!

Keeping with the rope theme, check out this stair rail using rope.  This staircase is featured on the House Beautiful website and was designed by Thom Felicia.  The showcase apartment, which takes inspiration from the movie The Big Chill will air on the Fine Living Network January 26th for the prime time special “Cinema Style: Designers Visions.”

Mix ‘n Match

Posted By Jill-LA | Oct 13, 2009 | 7 Comments | Category: Decorating, Furniture

We tend to see so many pairs of things: pair of sconces, pair of table lamps, pair of end tables, pair of nightstands, pair of chairs, pair of mirrors…I love symmetry and balance but once in awhile it’s fun to mix it up a bit.

3x

Dining chairs are a good place to mix ‘n match.

4x

Mixing and matching mirrors (especially ones in a similar frame or style) but of different scale and sizes (not unlike a post I did on a whole wall of mirrors).

8

5

Again, different mirrors in the bathroom, mixes up the standard pair of mirrors.

10x

The casual look of pulling up several “mixed use” chairs for dining.

2x

Matching but mixing ever so subtle, the difference in the seat backs around the table.

This past Thursday evening I attended the SFERRA/All The Best party at Nathan Turner’s showroom.  It was quite the evening with all the best of the design world in attendance.  From a who’s who of bloggers to a packed crowd of design stars. Beginning with Kelly Wearstler as special guest showcasing her line for SFERRA to Ronda of All The Best celebrating her partnership with SFERRAto Nathan Turner for hosting the event and catering courtesy of Lulu Powers.

As the room(s) started to fill with one familiar design face after the other, it became quite the stellar crowd:  Barclay Butera, Oliver Furth, Jamie Rummerfield, Lizzie Dinkle, Mayer Rus, Minnie Mortimer…However, the highlight of my evening: meeting fellow bloggers for the first time!  Only it didn’t feel as if it were the first time. In a unique way, in this virtual world we are a part of, it felt as if there was a level of camaraderie between my “blogger colleagues.” For instance, following the blog by Ronda of All The Best, I already had a sense of where she goes, who she meets, who she interviews.  Then Brooke from Velvet & Linen; I’ve seen glimpses into her family life, her husband’s projects, & her third place win of the All The Best Bedroom Contest.  A new introduction, I met Scot of TartanScot who is also the second place winner of the All The Best Bedroom Contest.  Megan of Beach Bungalow 8 joined us, and while I didn’t really get a chance to talk to her, it was great to see her in person!  Last but not least, I just adore Christian of Maison21.  We had been in contact for far too long about meeting up, and finally – we meet in person!  It was so great to hang out with him and chat, we’ve already got lunch plans in the works!

2x(Top, L-R): Ronda of All The Best, Brooke of Velvet & Linen, Megan of Beach Bungalow 8, Christian of Maison21, Scot of TartanScot, and me – Material Girls LA!

(Bottom: Jill & Christian)

All in all, it was the meeting of  “a bevy of bloggers” (as Christian so aptly put it) that was the highlight of my evening.  Not to say the whole event wasn’t a highlight – it sure was!  Thanks SO much to Ronda for including us all.  And to the rest, thanks for sharing an evening of ALL THE BEST!
