Roped In

Awhile back, I wrote a blog post about this staircase by interior designer Thom Filicia, using a rope as a handrail (loved the idea then, still love the idea now). I came across a website that manufactures ropes for handrails (and their line even includes the details such as fittings, knots, and towel bars).  The company is called Stair Ropes and they are based in the UK, with customers here in the States too.

They carry ropes in different colors and two-toned versions.

And different fittings and finishes.

And various types of knots and sizes.

Accessories too, like this towel ring.

I love the idea for an outdoor space too.

This is a brilliant find! I just did a post on updating my boys’ bathroom — with a fun whale wallpaper – so a nautical nod. These would make the perfect towel bars! Elizabeth

Rope handrails are common in France. I’ve seen some very beautifully ones done with more elaborate ropes with vintage fixtures. If you want a less traditional rope and happen to come to Paris scour the big flea market (called Les Puces). Just be careful how you fix them to the wall because if you take a tumble down the stairs you’ll rip the fixtures out of the wall, sort of like when you get a loose thread in a hem. It needs to be specially anchored into the wall. I am sadly speaking from experience!

This is very creative. I might just add one in one of my bathrooms.
