Roped In

Posted By Jill-LA | Jul 10, 2010 | Category: Decor Accessories, Decorating

Awhile back, I wrote a blog post about this staircase by interior designer Thom Filicia, using a rope as a handrail (loved the idea then, still love the idea now). I came across a website that manufactures ropes for handrails (and their line even includes the details such as fittings, knots, and towel bars).  The company is called Stair Ropes and they are based in the UK, with customers here in the States too.

They carry ropes in different colors and two-toned versions.

And different fittings and finishes.

And various types of knots and sizes.

Accessories too, like this towel ring.

I love the idea for an outdoor space too.

Door Stops

Posted By Jill-LA | Jun 23, 2010 | Category: Decor Accessories

Such a simple thing – a door stop.  Funny enough, I once had a client who asked me where to find a nice door stop.  I sort of drew a blank then thought that would make a great innovative product design to invent a cool looking door stop.  Coincidentally, there’s Stoppy. Stoppy is a fun and decorative window and door stop that comes in an array of colors that grips all surfaces.  No more tripping over a big heavy object holding open a door.  (Available at Bed Bath & Beyond.)

Spring is in the Air!

Posted By Jill-LA | Mar 24, 2010 | Category: Decor Accessories, Designers

It’s starting to feel a lot like spring here in LA – not bad for timing considering it is officially Spring now! We’ve been fortunate enough to have sunny, warm weather the past few weeks.  Now comes time for a little spring cleaning and a time to change out that wintry decor to fresh, bright spring/summer accessories.  I think the home collection by Trina Turk certainly says “spring is in the air.”

Palm Springs Block Pillow

Lator Gator Hook Rug

Palmetto Beach Towel

Trina Turk Citrus Candle

Palm Springs Block Table Napkins

Tapestry Pillows

And don’t forget an outfit to go with all those fun home accessories!

Spring Forward!

Posted By Jill-LA | Mar 10, 2010 | Category: Decor Accessories

It’s that time of year again – this weekend we set the clocks one hour ahead meaning longer daylight hours. I much prefer this time of the year as I am so not an early morning riser and having a longer day feels more productive for me.

So in case you don’t already have a zillion clocks to change this weekend (and if you are anything like me, I like them all set exactly to the same time, a tedious task) then consider adding some fun clocks as accessories like these:

Crystal Block Clock

Around Clock

Lotus Wall Clock

Ghost Clock

galaxy wall clock

Bristol Cuckoo Clock

half day clock

teacher’s pet clock

Bling Wall Clock

pace wall clock

Petal Links Modern Wall Clock

I came across these collections of pouffes by Dutch Designer Nicolette Brunklaus via nook and thought they were interesting.  After viewing the collections on her website, I discovered she has a range of products that includes lighting, pillows, curtains, ceramics, and silk paintings.

…comes a beautiful selection of bedding that are all made of natural fibers and kind to the earth.

The company happens to be called “lazybones” from Australia.  I was fortunate to have been introduced to these lovely quilts and duvets through a client of mine.  It just so happens that I am currently working on a work/live loft space for an Australian who represents the line in the states through her showroom the “Rose Showroom.”

Tracy Hocking is the owner and designer for lazybones.  Her love of clothing and fabric design from the 1920’s-1950’s has been the inspiration for the bedlinens (and also the line of sleepwear and clothing collections) that she designs.

The line is also sold at Anthropologie stores nationwide.

{Pink white smocked quilt}

{Dove smocked quilt}

{Grey marle quilt}

{Lace charcoal pillow case}

{Rosette organic}

{Smocked quilt pillows}

{Smocked quilt white and tan}

*The Rosette Lazybones quilts in Plum, Heather, Natural, Charcoal and soon to be Navy and Raisin are available at Anthropologie. For all other designs, please go to www.lazybones.com.au.

The placement of artwork is something I often work with a client on towards the end of a project.  It usually involves us spending time together figuring the best placement for each piece.  Often I find a client may have a personal attachment to a piece of artwork that they will want to place in a special or specific location.  I tend to place artwork based on scale of the wall and arrangement of furniture. But truly, there are many ways and means of how and in what way to hang artwork.  I’ve also worked on projects where the client needed to acquire art and have worked with that client to help them select pieces.  Although, I always start by telling the client art is a very personal choice and feel they should buy what appeals to them.  Some clients have collections, others are looking to acquire, and still others are on budgets and are looking to simply decorate.  I had a client who wanted to invest in fine art and we worked collaboratively with a fine arts dealer, another client who’s husband had a comic book collection that we framed for the home office, and another client where we shopped at home good stores to find inexpensive artwork to fill the walls.

Domino magazine always featured great little how to tidbits and creative adivce like this spread on different ways to hang artwork.

3

This breakfast nook featured in a spread from Elle Decor displays family photos and children’s artwork with a mix of pictures leaning on a shelf and  collaged walls below.  A very personable display of art.

4

Framing like items is always such a great way to feature a collection, similar frames and matting define the grouping and look ideal in a hallway or corridor if there are many to display.

5

Clustering a set of pictures appears as one large back drop of artwork.

6

An interesting vignette of different scaled artwork.

7

Art en masse in the same size and framing creates a gallery of artwork.

9

Balance dominates in this living room display of art although the pieces of artwork are different in size and frames, but the arrangement is of equal balance.

8

Another past Domino magazine feature, a collection of plates (left) and a series of art (right) offer another way of arranging.

{There are so many creative ways to display artwork and arrange wall collections. Analyzing interiors can give you a lot of ideas on how to arrange artwork and figure which works best for your space.}

Pretty Pillows

Posted By Jill-LA | Nov 25, 2009 | Category: Decor Accessories, Decorating

symmetry_blue2

I first saw this pillow (above) via Real Simple and thought it was darling.  I clicked the link to the site to discover more pretty pillows and that their origin is Hungarian, made in Hungary using traditional Hungarian motifs. I happen to be half Hungarian (Austrian descent on my dad’s side, Hungarian descent on my mom’s side) so immediately connected to something that displayed a bit of heritage.  Aside from heritage, these pillows are just really pretty!

Sandor_collection_gp_blue

This pillow is made by using hand -cut reverse felt applique.

My Hungarian grandmother used to sew a lot, this pillow reminds me of something she would have made.

The reds are pretty too!

{All pillows available online at Horne}

Now if only I could find those traditional Hungarian cookies & pastries my grandmother used to make for the holidays…
